I dont understand how people say " who did he beat Casa, Diaz???" these guys were top ranked in their divisions & fights were for titles. Not to mention JMM was coming up in weight to chase pac. He fought MAB (say what you want about MAB being shot, but Pac fought MAB again after JMM) Casa, Diaz (both for titles & coming up in weight) & held a draw & sd loss (which many felt he won) against the at the time ferocious Pac. Fought & loss a good competive fight with chris john.
i dont know if i could put jmm on top 50 atg, but below that he's up there somewhere within the 100s. jmm beat a hell out of good to great guys for sure.
Yeah i know what you meant, thought i'll just point it out.. It shouldn't be used often, I dont agree with it when it is, for example Cotto isn't a great but is a HOF in my opinion, Hatton no way a great, but he did something with the fans that seems very improbable to be replicated Golovkin is untested, De La Hoya isnt an ATG, he's a great/HOF Greats are fighters that would succeed in any era, Elites are fighters that are successful in their own era, whilst they may not be a success in others, E.g. Bradley, he wouldnt be a success in the early 80's... Ward is an elite, but with passing time he would and should be regarded as an great All in my opinion
The mere fact that people can't even agree to the terminology being used makes this an exercise in futility. What aspects of a particular fighter people find intruiging or career defining are completely subjective. Boxing is a completely subjective sport. On one hand, a win is a win, a loss is a loss, but the subjective nature of the sport, from the judges, to casual observer, to the boxing pundits, and even the trainers/ fighters themselves, makes it nearly impossible to come to a consensus. What we can do is compare wins and losses, but the quality and validity of those matches are all a matter of opinion. Marquez's fights with Pac are really great fights that showcased a great deal of the aspects of boxing all fans and pundits love. Grit, drama, blood, knockdowns, knockouts, questionable decisions, shady judges, shady promoters, shady team members, nationalism , Etc. Just those 4 fights fall, in my opinion, under all time great match ups. Both fighters are spectacular fighters. Perhaps here in the states, Marquez's ATG status may be in question, but in Mexico, you can bet your ass that he is looked upon as a boxing giant. El Gran Campeón Mexicano. I'm a huge fan of Marquez, and I DO think he belongs in the ATG category, but I have a totally different set of criteria for that, and it is pretty lenient, as my opinion doesn't really mean ****. It's all of our ideas and opinions generating so much drama, that makes being a fan so damn enjoyable. But really, if you don't think Marquez is just f*cking awesome. You're a weenie. Guy's a freaking bad-ass. Just sayin'...
if he isnt he sure is close the wins over Pacquiao & Barrera and then the other good ones he had over Diaz, Gainer, Salaido, Juarez (X2), Casamayor & Katsidis as well as titles at 126 130 and 135 hell of a career
Probably somewhere between great and ATG. Since changing his overall boxing style to a more "fan friendly" version, he has some very nice wins against a bunch of HOF'ers (Pacman, MAB, Casa.) It doesn't hurt that he made an ATG in Pacman go life and death with him in all of their fights, and put a stamp on that series with one of the best Knockouts I've seen in a long time. I have no problem ranking him in the top 50 of all time. He's probably also in the top 5-7 Mexican fighters of all time. He's had a helluva career, I didn't see this coming after he looked mediocre against Chris John in Indonesia. Talk about a revival of a career in the latter half of it.
It's a bummer, because I like Pac too, but Marquez is my favorite fighter. It is just a bummer that some people can't just enjoy the Pac/Marquez rivalry for what it is. A great set of fights. It's the harsh ending that left some people with a chip on their shoulder. It's a shame, because that knockout was just amazing. He hit Pac so damn hard that he woke him out of the Matrix.
