Has Machida shown that a karate-BASED style can be effective in the cage? Or is it just an interesting but ultimately futile gimmick? :hat
It's effective until you get taken to the ground which is basically guaranteed to happen. Machida quickly lost the fight against Bones the moment he was tackled. Machida definitely out-strikes him any day of the week though.
I think the OP means using Karate as one of the disciplines rather than pure Karate. Common opinion is wrestling, BJJ, Boxing and Muy Thai are the main tools but Rogan actually made a valid point on Saturday about Karate being all about getting off first. I think the 'pouncing' nature can have it's place but I do not think you need to go down the karate route too far, just try and add that to the arsenal as i think the rest is pretty useless in the cage.
