Overall, I think Pavlik has been a bit underrated a little bit since the Hopkins fight. The fact is, Kelly has every advantage in the book against Maravilla Martinez. The sheer size advantage is too much. Sergio is not in the same league as a focused Bernard Hopkins skillwise either. Kelly would also have a natural size advantage against Paul Williams. Compared to Martinez, Williams' style makes Pavlik's size difference work a lot more in his favor in that matchup. I can't say I'd pick any opponent Pavlik's management puts in front of him to beat him every time either. If Kelly goes up and whips some of those Super Six guys he discredited not too long from now, then he will have proved some people wrong. That's what it will take imo. If Pavlik's as good as some think he is, then I expect him to walk right through Sergio. The question is, will he? We'll find out this weekend.
He used to be beyond overrated before the Hopkins fight, now he's rated fine. People know his limitations because the majority need to see those limitations exploited in an actual loss to believe it and that's what happened. The fight on Saturday is 50/50 as it's supposed to be in my opinion, I'll be very impressed if Pavlik wins it with ease and will definitely give him credit for it.
every advantage except Speed and mobility??? Those are enough for Martinez to win the fight. HOWEVER I dont agree with you. I think that Martinez also enjoys a sizable advantage in skills and the ability to adjust in the ring, along with overall in ring boxing knowledge. In fact I would say that Pavlik only enjoys a size and power advantage. As for the question of the thread, I dont think that its as simple as the thread starter is impling. Pavlik is both over and under rated if that makes any sense. many people are saying that he cant beat elite fighters simple because he hasnt really done it since taylor. while some act as if fights with Taylor and Maranda were walks in the park for Kelly, and that he has simple distroyed everyone in his path. its those people that seem to think that Martinez has no shot at winning the fight, and that Pavlik could and would beat the fighters in the super-six.
I'd also say he became underrated among the average fan. The thing is: if Martinez can fight as a legit middleweight, and that's a big IF, his style could cause Pavlik serious troubles, but it's not that Pavlik is some one-dimensional slugger, far from it! His game is pretty much based on the solid jab that sets up the power hand, and he's very highly effective in that dimension, actually unbeaten with it in his division, and it takes a special fighter to bring him out of that dimension, which happened at 170lbs vs. a very tricky ATG, and that's about it. Saturday's fight IMO is interesting not because there's a big skill disparity, but becuase there's a big style and physical difference and whichever comes out on top - size is favored - could decide the outcome. I'm not happy like everyone else that KP is taking on a light-middleweight, on the other hand, I'm happy he's taking on a difficult top fighter he can make a statement against, and you can expect fireworks. So when I say Pavlik became underrated I also mean that the overall attention he and his fight is getting is unfortunately lower than is should be. 2010 started rather disappointing, but this one is not to overlook! One wants to define his career, the other wants to prove he's still the legitimate ruler of his division, and both look for more credit than they are currently getting.
Not really cause you have a lot of Pavlik nuthuggers who thinks he is awesome and then you have some who say he isnt even that good. I dont agree with either he is a very capable fighter (but nothing special) and he does have a big punch. I actually think he is rated about right, im picking Martinez to win this but not cause i think Kelly is not a good fighter i just think Martinez is even better than many people think. However i wont be surprised if the bigger Pavlik can pull out a come from behind late Ko. Im 62/38 for Martinez i this one PS: One think i know is i told everyone he was overrated before the Hopkins fight, i picked Hopkins in that one.
No. Not at all. And as for his fanboys, they are the most extreme and delusional ive seen of any fighter.
Its totally ambiguous how good or bad Pavlik is, so underated/overrated is an impossible question. He beat Taylor (who was either never very good to begin with, or was in steep decline) then fought guys like Lockett and Espino, inbetween getting utterly outclassed by B-Hop - so really, what does this tell us about Pavlik? Nothing definitive, that's for sure. Jury is still out, wait and see.
The bold part is utter nonsense. Pavlik was winning national amatuer titles when Martinez started boxing. About the same time Pavlik beat Taylor twice, Martinez fought a wino with a 3-34 record, and the great Archak Termeliksatian!. The one thing Martinez lacks more than anything else is fundamental boxing skill. He's an awkward brawler with fast hands and feet, nothing more. Martinez is so easy to hit that the notoriously sloppy Paul Williams racked up a 33% connect rate. PW only connected 24% against Margarito. Let that sink in for a minute! Martinez failed to close the show against both Cintron and Williams. He ended up with a draw and a loss. Why? Because he did not do enough to convince the judges he deserved to win. If he was as great as people say he is, he would have dominated both men.
Failed to close the show?! Lol dude, Cintron got COUNTED OUT! That's a clean KO! The corner entered the ring, that's a DQ! He dominated Cintron over 12, that's a wide UD. Maravilla beat Cintron 3 times that night and still got a draw.
Never heard of anything similar to that before. Martinez knocked Cintron down for the full count, the referee counted TEN, then Cintron's team TALKED HIM OUT OF IT! Don King is probably still upset he wasn't there to comment.
Yep. Even waved the fight off. And before anyone tries to dispute that, why else would Cintron's people jumped in the ring otherwise? They wanted, and got, the KO count rescinded....... Next time his corner should just sit closer to the bell. That has been known to work too.
