I think McCloskey had a lot to do with it. Not only was he staying out of Khan's range, but he was staying completely out of his own too. He had no intention of taking the fight to Khan, and focused entirely on getting out of the way of punches. When an opponent is as negative as this, of course you're going to be made to look ordinary. Dirrell vs Froch is a prime example.

And yes, Khan did look amateurish, just like he looked amateurish against Malignaggi in the early rounds. We know this about Khan, and considering McCloskey's awkward style, we should have envisaged this. I just think that McCloskey's extra negativity and awkwardness, magnified Khan's mistakes a little more.

I don't think Khan's taken a backward step in his development. I just think he's hit a brick wall.

Freddie Roach does not bull**** anyone , Khan has not made backward steps under Roach at all , how can you train a fast athletically gifted fighter who relies on hand speed and athletesism to suddenly become Floyd Mayweather :huh , just because Khan didnt land every shot on McCloskey that he threw does not make him an ineffective fighter , in fact quite the opposite , Khans output alone was enough to overcome the over matched McCloskey .

When Khan went to Roach he had zero defence , absoltley zero , he didnt have great lateral movement , and he was struggling to make the weight , now he has a tactical mastermind training him , he has top sparring , he has the best strategist in the game and the most dedicated coach in the world .

By default he will not make a single backward step with this type of surrounding

 

Like i have said maybe McCloskey did have more to do with Khan looking ordinary than Khan himself. So i can't disagree with you on that.
My biggest gripe with Khan is that he see's himself has an explosive puncher and he just simply is not. I mean aside from the bodyshot in the first, Maidana was just walking through his punches. And then after the McCloskey stoppage, he said it was a good stoppage has he could have end up hurting Paul if the fight went on. And he wasn't talking about the cut.
I would never question Roach, but i just feel there are things that need adressing with Amir's technique and attitude.
That's just my thoughts looking in from the outside.
Rainmaker's idea of hooking up with Haye, regarding his power could be a good idea. Although unlikely. I couldn't see Freddy letting anyone else have input.
