The Keed brings alot to the ring...indomitable will, ATG chin, speed, boxing skills, experience, relentless...not the biggest puncher at welterweight...but is pretty much the whole package.
Ike Williams beat the young Gavilan, but lost in the returns...Billy Graham lost arguable decisions against Gavilan...Ray Leonard? Emile Griffith? Jose Napoles?...
Is Gavilan the 2nd best welterweight H2H of all time? Who would you pick to beat him? (besides SRR, of coarse.)
I'm not sure I'd pick anyone over him...:think

    Leonard
    Hearns
    Griffith
    Napoles
    Burley
    Whitaker

All decent bets. None of which I'd strongly favor(if at all) though.

Strong list. Gavilan against any those fighters are absolutely great fights...Leonard may take a decision from the Keed...but I think Gavilan would beat the rest...IMO. But those fights are very close...Would the attacking Gavilan be able to take the straight right hand bombs from Hearns? I think he could...Gavilan's frenetic attack and stamina would earn him the (close) decison over the rest...and perhaps SRL as well...

Kid Gavilan vs. Sugar Ray Leonard, is one of the hardest fights to pick a winner (for me anyway):good

Very strong list. I have Luis Rodriguez and Thomas Hearns in my top six for H2H welters...But you have a list that cannot be argued with :good

I agree on Gavilan vs Leonard, what a great stylistic matchup that would be. Hearns is one I might favor over Gavilan, because while Gavilan could take his punches, I don't believe he could outbox Hearns.

Solid point. Very rarely, fighters out fought Hearns. But he was never ever outboxed!

Perhaps, but a certain Onion Famer was ROBBED vs Gavilan. How they score it for Gavilan I never know. They did get it right a few years later when this Onion farmer ko Demarco for the title.

From what I've heard, Gavilan did enough in the late rounds to retain his title, after the fight being Basilio's for the early and mid-rounds.

He was asking in head to head terms. I don't even know if it's possible to rate De La Hoya or Trinidad over Hearns in H2H terms.

Nah, not second. Fifth, perhaps; a brilliant welterweight.

Sure Gavilan came on strong in the late rounds, but it was 2 late at that time, You cant over come a late rounds rally and win when you thown away the early and middle rounds lile Gavilan did. Also the knockdown in the 2nd round. Basilio should have won that.
