Knockout has been champion for 8 years and 3 months. He has been champion for a longer time than Ricardo Lopez, who was champion for 8 years and 1 month. Does that make him the longest running minimumweight champion?
I checked Wikipedia's list, and it turns out he is #1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_world_mini-flyweight_boxing_champions Congrats to Knockout Freshmart! I wonder if he can get some news articles (HINT HINT Boxingnews24 writers). Seems like a pretty big accomplishment, the division has been around for decades; and he's not too old yet. Considering how frequently he fights (lol) he should be able to extend his record by a lot.
He would have to have more wins over legitimate competition for this accomplishment to have any meaning.
Lopez's final defence at Mimimumweight was in November 1998, 8-years and 1-month after he became a titleist. However, as per the link you've posted, he didn't vacate until 1999. I'm not sure exactly when in 1999 he vacated, but it wouldn't have been later than October when he fought for, and won, the IBF title up at Light Fly. Regardless, it's likely KCP has a number of months to go before he's technically the longest reigning minimumweight titelest in history.
He turned his name into an ad........Jesus H. I know it's common for Thai boxers to change their "stage names" to reflect the gym they came from, but this is rank.
Yeah, there's been a recent trend of referring to Thai fighters by their given name, rather than their nom-de-guerre. Anyway, Thammanoon Niyomtrong (Freshmart) is quite good and he has some decent wins, but given that he never unified I'd still put him firmly behind Lopez.
