Of course he didn't fight the more recognizable Americans of his era because he was Australian by way of Russia that is to say in the eyes of most Americans a commie. All the name Americans fought each other, sometimes 2-3 times but they never fought Tszyu. He just couldn't get those fights while someone like Mayweather can fight anybody but choses his opponents very carefully.

    Kostya is a legend. Simple.

His career had a great deal of disadvantages to those of many of the day, yet he managed to unify the JnrW/W division with ease. The split from Bill Mordey was lame, as Kostya eneded up being managed by a con artist car saleman, in Wlad Wharton... a man who knew precisely nil about boxing. Fact.

Being managed by Wharton cost Tyszu millions of dollars... a better level of respect... an less inclinations for top liners to chase Kostya for a bout.

Injury plaqued Tszyu for the last 5 years of his career, hence the lack of fights in those years. Kostya was a complete professional in himself, and unwilling to fight unless he felt 100% fit.

I've been lucky too spend a lot of time with Tszyu and co. Watching his sparring sessions with then amatuer, soon to be professional, Steve Johnson etc, as well as being very good mates with one of his regular Melbourne Referees.

Put simply, Kostya is rated on this forum pretty well, as its hard to define the exact standing he deserves, due to inactivity, poor management and other factors.

Regardless, his fight footage speaks for its self. As its should, and allows for arguements from fans. IMO, he was a determined and classic fighter. His status will grow as the years pass. No man ever battered South Paws so brilliantly. Its a tragedy we never saw Pernell vs Kostya.
