Kovalev had the skill that is necessary for a Hall of Famer. But he turned pro too late, was mismanaged early, had his first notable fight at the age of 32, and his prime was cut short due to his unprofessional lifestyle out of the ring. His career is a sad story about a wasted talent, he could have had a much better career, but he never had any luck in life. It was sad to see that ultimately he needed to sell his soul to Canelo, succumbing to his deck stacking so the Russian could finally have a big money fight in his career. Kovalev deserves respect for one thing. He went to America without knowing how to speak English and without having a promoter. He was willing to fight for free for 3 years until a promoter finally signed him. He was living on loans from his manager, Egis Klimas and fought in restaurants and hotels until that happened. That is a sacrifice and risk taking in life that 99% of men would not take.
I don’t think anyone doubts his talent and ability. Excellent jab and destructive power however against a truly great fighter like Ward you need much more.
Borderline. Had he rightfully gotten the nod in the first Ward fight in Ward’s backyard - when Ward was the consensus p4p guy - he’d be a lock. His career dramatically declined after that, although the rebound win over Alvarez was important. His resume is a little light, on positive side he was road warrior without big promotion that literally fought his way to the top. 50/50 imo.
