Let me expand on the "slickness" topic. Have you ever heard of Meldrick Taylor? Well, Meldrick was one of the fastest fighters i've ever seen! he had serious handspeed on him and could shoeshine like no one, because of that many people would mistakenly call him slick. But he really wasn't. Most people think being fast equates to being slick, but you have to look closer.

Pernell Whitaker (the man in my avatar) wasn't as fast as his mate Meldrick Taylor, but he was super slick and Meldrick wasn't. Why? it's because slick fighters beat you with as many feints as punches and make you miss and make you pay. I want you to listen really good. There's a big difference in being fast with your body and being fast and quick in your mind. Slick fighters have quickness in their mind, it's all about anticipation and reading your opponent. Meldrick Taylor was fast but Pernell was quick in his mind.

Many people wouldn't think it, but someone like Roberto Duran and even Joe Calzaghe were slick. They did subtle things that people miss and they were simultaneous in being offensive and defensive at the same time.

There's definitely a wrong perception that "Black" fighters are all slick. This is the trap you've fallen into. Think about this, Oscar De La has displayed more traits of a slick fighter then Shane Mosley, but because Shane is black people would call him slick before they call Oscar slick. Shane is the perfect example of the mistake people make, he's always been more a fast brawler then a slick boxer, but that speed fools people.

 

Don't recall exactly which and am not re-watching or trying to dig up my round by round scoring just for your sake. Why don't you name 6 rounds he definitely couldn't have won?

Your point about Mosley's spot on. But it's worth bearing in mind that early in his career he paid more attention to his defence - he was slick, made adjustments, used his speed to move out of range and then get back with a counter. Beating Oscar the first time was the worst thing that could have happened to him.

He fell in love with his chin and started trading serious leather whenever he could. And his dad didn't help much, and neither did the trainer after (I forget who it was). If he'd worked with Nazim earlier he could have been much more rounded.

Also, slick fighters tend to have good jabs that they use to offset their opponent's rhythm. They nearly always employ lateral movement to get angles and force their opponents to punch across themselves (guys like Toney are exceptions). And they tend to be as adept at coming forwards as going backwards.

 

I felt Ortiz had maybe nicked it by a round. But a draw was quite fair under the circumstances.

The damage Ortiz did in the early portion of the fight seems to distort how others see it. When I rewatched it, it was a very close fight. All you needed was to give Peterson the first and he easily could have taken another six rounds.

 

I scored it to Ortiz by a point. Most, if not everyone else, in the RBR had it wider than that.
