Langford, a 17 year old just beating not just the champion, but a top 5 lightweight of all time is just insane. And IIRC, Joe Gans was in his prime too. And so what do you think?
Not sure, since Gans’ performance was affected by the fact he fought a tough fight with Dave Holly just the day before. Apparently Gans’ cardio and overall shape was poor.
Arguably, it was impressive that Sam was said to have out-generalled him, that's absurd. But Gans was on a bit of a tour and you can't be ATG every night if you're boxing exhibitions while the opposition is trying to kill you, and Gans had some sort of stomach problem the night of the fight. On paper, it is, in reality, it probably isn't.
Must be thinking of another fight, though I'm not sure which one. Langford comprehensively outboxed Gans - it was essentially Langford's breakout performance. Langford's win over Gans reminds me of Ezzard Charles beating Burley - a young ATG-to-be shows the first glimpses of his potential by decisively upsetting a naturally smaller, but more experienced/well-established great.
