He had decent handspeed, but he had excellent timing, distance and footwork and with that you dont need exceptional handspeed.
He had very fast hands, but they were not as fast as Louis. I will admit though when he knocked out Marvis Frazier in the first round, I had never seen him throw combinations that fast in any other fight.
Just who doesn't have faster hands than Cobb? Let alone when Tex gets tired and really starts looping shots. Did you back Randy with some big $$$ when they met? Nobody else did and it was a mismatch from the second it was signed.
I did love the hype from the Cobb camp prior to the actual meeting with Holmes in 1982 Texas....... Cobb was using a row boat in training to build shoulder muscle and assist his punch output..... Cobb was around 234 to 235 pounds next to the 217 pound Holmes and in good shape... Skillwise? Of course Holmes wins that battle, but Cobb was a game mutha'.... I had the fight on tape, but my sister recorded "I Love Lucy" over the fight.... This content is protected !! MR.BILLbbb
I know how you feel. My sister taped "Whos the boss" and other programs over my HBO version of Hagler and Hearns. This was months later when catching it again and taping it was out of the question.
Holmes in his prime had great hand speed. Yes--I think its underrated in the sense that he is hardly mentioned as having extremely fast hands.
Holmes in his prime from 1978 to 1983 also had awesome leg speed........... Look at him move against "Norton, Shavers, Berbick, Cooney & Spoon." How many others besides "Corbett, Johnson, Tunney, Charles, Walcott, Patty and Ali" before him can compare???? Holmes was fast up and down...... WTF? MR.BILLbbb:hat
I mean, I don't think it's on par with Ali's speed but he probably has more pop. Despite Ali actually stopping great quality guys.
Holmes had great speed, And without question, THE best heavweight jab of all time ! Fast, heavy and with a ton of snap. I see only Clay as faster and Holmes is on par with Ali...
