He got starched by Rahman. But he returned the favor in emphatic fashion. He did duck Byrd actually for a million dollars and Range Rover. Losing most of his belts had more to do with pursuing big money fights than really ducking opponents but I don't think it should hurt him or help him. Vitaly put up a good fight but was ultimately stopped despite his gallant effort and emphatic pleas to continue. Lewis won fair in square and as he realized that his body wasn't the same and called it a day, as champion. That is leaving on a high note. Don't twist it or change the situation to take away what was essentially a good win for Lewis by turning this into a Vitaly thread. It's not fair to either fighter.
I think the Rahman series adds to his legacy. Lewis showed a ton of heart travelling into Rahman's hometown and absolutely sparking him out after being KO'd in the first match. That showed he had the heart and mental makeup of a true fighter. Wlad had big brother take care of Sanders after he got KO'd. A great illustration between the two.
Nice try but this is exactly my point: Lewis valued money over legacy in his later years. Why shouldn't it be held against him.
Because these guys do not do it for fun . . . its how they make a livingatsch. So many tend to forget that this a business or how fighters make a living first . . . then a sport. Very few fighters do this **** for fun and those are the ones who leave the sport penniless
Lewis was a hell of a champ. Not perfect, but a damn good HW. Came back from adversity, beat Holyfield twice. Yes, he got a TKO by cornrows against Vitali, but he probably would have beaten him anyway. It's a rough sport, boxing. The Tyson "fight" was a joke, but so what, Lewis dominated. It is what it is. Haters gonna hate. And he'd have left Wlad starched on the canvas.
Why should he rematch someone he beat so easily?? Rachman Ko'd a prime Sanders and a 37year old Sanders destroyed Vladimir Vitali was lucky he was fighting an ancient 38 year old Sanders or he would probably have been stopped And neither of them did as well against Sanders as Rachman did against a younger Sanders..............But Vitaly kept cancelling his fights against Rachman and left the sport rather than face him, waiting till Rachman was 36 and was fighting his brother. Nice tag team! Its interesting to note that Vitali is fighting Chisora next, who wouldnt have been able to beat Gary Mason who Lewis beat at domestic Level on the way up - I mean, how embarrassing Vitali fights a 15-2 fighter as a title defence, where Lewis was fighting Masons 35-0 at domestic level
