I agree, the First Holyfield fight was atrocious, one of the worst fights I've ever seen. No way was that a Draw, I think I gave Holyfield 2 rounds in the first fight, 4 in the second.
It's not who won deformity. Deformed ass. It's how the fight went. I'm talking about how Holy stood right in front of Lewis in both fights. So did Rahman and so did McCall. Lewis clearly won both Holy fights, but I saw vulnerability in Lewis when matching him against atg's. It's amazing that boxers gave Lennox problems too, but in the end Lewis won, and he gets credit for that. Lennox could dish it out and take it. If you had fast hands you could give him problems doe. If you went right at him you had a chance. But Lennox had a fight changing punch. Holyfield was done after the Lewis fights. He never had a meaningful win after that.
Lewis vs Bowe would have been great to see Lewis would have decisively beaten Bowe. IMO The Lewis wins over Tua and Briggs were especially good wins Vitali vs Lewis II would have been an excellent fight for Lewis to end his career own I would love to have seen that, but truth be told, I think Lewis rightfully questioned his ability to win a rematch, so very wisely retired on a good note rather than take a big risk late in his career But then again, so many heavies fight on and fight well at 37 years old
Lennox made a pretty penny fighting lol. The more you enjoy your money the more your hunger for the sport leaves the body lol. I don't know if he doubted himself since both guys took the fight on short notice. Maybe he thinks that if I beat him on short notice, if I train I ko him. Vitali never had Lewis hurt. You know when Lewis is hurt. He always showed you this. But the ma did cut the Vitali to win. Henry Cooper lost two fights to the champ on cuts. Cuts do happen.
He was less popular than Tyson and Holyfield in his own era. Most everybody rates him top 5 HW, so I'd say he is certainly not underrated.
Lewis-Klitchko happened on short notice but they were both already training for different fights on the same card. It's not like they were both lounging around in their underwear drinking beer, got the call, then brushed off the oreo crumbs, spent a week sparring and then fought.
I feel that enough time has passed since his retirement that he's beginning to be placed where he should be. Definitely top 10 material for me, though I'm sure there could be an argument for top 15 of you really want to dig.
I think he is a 'right place , right time' fighter. He needed to stop Holyfield to really show how great he was but it was more of a chess match. Plus the 1st Oliver McCall fight told me that Tyson would have demolished him in his prime.
Lennox had no obligation to finish Holyfeld. That's something of a ridiculous statement to make, actually.
This isn't a court of law , its a boxing ring. So he is 'obligated' to perform to the highest standards if he is termed to be great. Therefore stopping an old past prime Holy was required.
The judges were obligatated (no quotation marks for this one) to fairly judge the fight. How'd that one go? Lennox didn't need to do anything but dominate, and he did. He wasn't the type to force stoppages.
Im not sure what you goal is here? The topic is 'Is Lennox Lewis Overrated' . I am saying to be termed great in my opinion he needed to stop and old and faded Holyfield he was 37 years old. He didn't. He stood off and at times even looked hesitant , which then gave the judges the opportunity to screw him over. A great fighter would have put Holyfield away convincingly.
