Sure they were. If you want to give Mercer a slight edge, that's fine. But they're definitely in the same ballpark, and Holmes was the one who consistently faced better level opposition.

He took Tyson to court and then he took the step aside money, regardless he was the mandatory and Tyson swerved him.

Do you not recall Bowe throwing the belt in the trash?

holmes ko'd people by wearing them down. mercer was a jab, iron chin, and power. that was all. as for opponent level, holmes ducked most of the names in his day. never once tried to unify.

That silly publicity stunt has been used for years by Lewis supporters, who have incessantly repeated the Lewis camp propaganda for so long they believe that it actually means something. The reality is Bowe's manager made a strategic financial calculation to take a gimme defense against a washed up Dokes in Bowe's hometown, which was to be followed by a high profile fight against rising contender - and Olympic team member who was no friend of Bowe's - Ray Mercer. Unfortunately for Bowe, Mercer lost his tuneup to Ferguson, and they had to take that fight instead. This was, of course, followed by a lucrative rematch against Holyfield

Basically, Rock Newman, Bowe's manager, was trying to make as much money as possible, while at the same time giving Lewis a chance to raise his profile in the U.S. Kind of like they're doing now with Joshua-Wilder, except in the reverse. And don't forget that the Bowe-Lewis fight was all but signed before Lewis went and got himself KOd against McCall!

Bowe blatantly ducked Lennox. Rock Newman admitted that one night in Dallas Tx at a black tie boxing affair. Bowe was parading round charging $10 for a pic with his belts. Newman said "Don't you want a pic with the champ"? Id had a few beers & answered without thinking' " He's not champion till he beats Lewis & he cannot do that " Bowe just walked away. Newman said after "Think man the fans bought Dokes & Ferguson for similar $$$ & little risk Why risk it all against Lewis"??? Ijust said " OK then but don't call him champ " I remember Curtis heard me & said "'Careful CJ I cant help you Bowes too big for me " LOL

Mercer had an iron chin that allowed him to come forward and press the attack but his power was only slightly above average. Outside of Morrison who was wilting with exhaustion and a come from behind freak shot that broke Damiani’s nose Mercer never ko’d Elite opponents. In fact if he could punch really hard he would of put Lewis down and maybe out.
Holmes stopped Weaver, Shavers, Cooney, L. Spinks.
I’d say Mercer and Holmes were in same ballpark and Holmes was more proven against top opposition.
