...to end his career with his finest victory? As most know Martin wrapped up his fight career by stopping a faded but still lethal Liston. But the victory was costly as Martin suffered a career ending detached retina.

For the life of me I can't think of another boxer who went out on what was definitively the best win of his career.

I think Sanchez is the best candidate, since I think that Nelson, even a green Nelson, is a better fighter than Wilfredo Gomez. That being said, the Nelson win lacked the amazing virtuosity Sanchez displayed against Gomez.

Marciano is another possibility, but I favor his wins over Walcott and Charles over the win against Moore.

Juan Manuel Marquez had a chance to join Martin if he'd retired after the fourth fight with Manny.

Marcel over Arguello - though it wouldn't have been apparent that this was Marcel's greatest win until some time later.

    Maybe Carbajal over Arce?

    Oh, great one with Marcel-Arguello!

As good as Carbajal-Arce was Carbajal-Gonzalez I was better. Still, great shout though.

Jimmy McLarnin retired after back to back wins over Tony Canzoneri and Lou Ambers. Not a bad full stop to a career at all.

Calzaghe-Jones? Please. Joe's wins over Kessler and Lacy were both more impressive. Hell, knocking out Byron Mitchell in two rounds was more impressive than getting dropped by an acient Roy Jones.

Zak Padilla - who was coming off a stoppage win over Jaun Laporte - the only time Laporte was stopped.

    Lamar Kidfire Parks Perhaps ?

With Dempsey much Faded...Gene Tunney vs Tom Heeney perhaps ?

    Good one.

Like Martin, I believe Padilla's career also ended due to injury - in a sparring session with Mosley IIRC.

Perhaps Monzon could be a candidate for this? - retired after arguably the two biggest wins of his career, vs. Valdez.

I think Monzon is an excellent and an obvious choice. I can't believe I overlooked him, although his title grab against Benvenuiti and kayo of Griffith are both outstanding as well.
