Is Lewis also the HW of the 2000's? Discuss.

I don't think he is for the 2000s. He retired sort of early.

I think its easier to argue him hw of the 00's than hw of the 90's as holy is right up there with him.

 

good point. It is really between Lennox and Evander in 1990s and Lennox and Klits in 2000s. Hagler,Hearns and Leonard all won title near the beginning of the 1980s so we can pretty much rate them in one decade, but Lennox was a mid decade to next mid decade fighter. Harder to put him in one specific decade. I do think he rates over Evander in the 1990s. Then we have to consider Bowe, who didn't last long but was legit for a few years. That would have solidified Lennox in the 1990s's. a win over Bowe.

Yeah definitely. I think from the first holy fight to the Golota fight, bowe was the best HW in the world.

Holy had a great start of the decade and a very strong finish fighting nearly even with Lewis in the rematch.

Lewis spent nearly the whole decade as the choice for "next best heavyweight" so he's a tough one to rank for me in that decade.

In the thousands he began as champ and regained the title in arguably a career best performance over Rahman. His win over Vitali is a huge boost for his legacy in the decade. Vitali can't really compete because he retired soon after hitting the pinnacle. Wlad is obvious choice to be up there but he lost twice by ko avenging one defeat. However I don't think he beat anyone in the decade who can compare with Lewis 's top few victories. It's close but but not as close as the previous decade for me.

 

and I think Lennox was about to stop Vitali with a right hand when they fought. People always said they stopping that fight took if from Vitali, but Lennox was starting to get in range with that right and landing it a little I think he would stopped Vitali in the next few rounds. I could see it, and Lennox was coming on.

 

Couldve been had he fought on into say, 06/07.

And his last fight, at age 37, he said he was he'd felt physically stronger than he'd ever before.

Couldve fought on without rematching Vitali. He'd KO Jones Jr, KO Ruiz, beat Byrd, and beat Valuev.

He didn't need those names to add to his already ATG resume, but wins over those guys woulda cemented him at the best of the 00s as well.:deal

Wlad is #1 and it is not even close. Wlad beat much better opposition than Lewis in '00s.
Byrd held wins over Tua and Holyfield at the time. McCline destroyed Grant in 1. Lewis was milking his belts in 00s while Wlad was fighting the top contenders.

 

His prime years were in the 2000's so it's possible.
