At the head to head with Tony 'The Tiger' Thompson [who is 44] he looked very much like the older man!!

Do Cuban boxers have any suspicious history fabricating ages? In say for example the way that African soccer players have often been accused or in some cases found out of chopping years off their ages.

Ortiz just looks so old it got me wondering if to help their prestigious amateur set up the Cuban regime *might* enter older fighters into say Under 16 international tournaments and then they are forced to carry on with this false DOB as they progress ... To the stage where they are so old it becomes apparent they are fibbing??

Or it could just be genetics and Ortiz has had a tough life!!

He has the same birthday as me only a year older, but he looks at least a decade older. Granted I look young for my age.

Bernard Hopkins (51) is sandwiched between Thompson and Ortiz in the photo ... And even he looks younger than the "36" year old!!

African players pretend to be 7-10 years younger than they are , because there is a lot of focus on the Under 18s world cup and african cup. One of the previous Nigerian winners of the under 18s world cup contained 7 players in their early and mid 20's.

Why would a boxer pretend to be older than they actually are? Surely, being older is going to cost them money

You mean pretend to be younger than they are, I think?

Because amateur boxing is such a big deal in Cuba that having older fighters above the age limit in World Youth tournaments gives you a huge advantage? It gives them no advantage as a pro, but only a handful defect so it's not an issue.

It only flags up when Ortiz looks substantially older than a man supposedly 8 years his senior!

As I said though ... He could just have an old face:lol:

If Ortiz did use the age trick, it's only natural he just kept up appearances when he started his pro career. Looks weird if you suddenly jump from 30 before his pro career up to say 35 in his first fight.
Plus, amateur orgs like AIBA might actually remove him from their youth records if he admitted he age cheated.

I'd honestly say that *looks* a good fit for what my eyes are seeing and how he looks compared next to 44 year old Thompson.

    It's by no means unprecedented.

The Cleveland Indians drafted a Cubano pitcher in the late 90s, early 00s, don't remember the name since he was a bust, but his OFFICIAL papers when he arrived in Miami said he was 19, but was later found out to be 25. Thats a whopping 6 yrs for a pitching prospect.

Not saying he competed as an amatuer in the 16 and under tournaments as a 22 y/o, but to get that MLB contract, he had some inside work done by officials within the Cuban govt. The passport, etc were legal documents, so......draw your own conclusions.

There's also that Dominican kid that was pitching in the Little League world series.....his papers said he was 12, while he was really 15.
It was incredible to see a 12 yo throwing 75 mph hooking curve***** and 85 mph heat.:lol::lol:
