i have the impression from different posts that a lot of people consider machida a spent force and no longer a contender, do you think this is true ? he's 33 and lost 3 times i think. he obviously did beat rampage, who even thought so too. lost to jones, however everyone is losing to him at the moment. at one stage machida was the fighter that sustained the least amount of punches in the ufc. plus for a hell of a period he won god knows how many rounds. people couldn't seem to work him out. so is he a different, inferior fighter these days?
1-1 with Shogun and losing to Jones just indicates he's hanging tough with the best of the division. Still top 5, even though he may be a little unsure of his style after Shogun. Not a spent force, maybe just lacking in confidence after people figured him out a little, well Shogun did and Jones got the takedown and that elbow which changed the fight. So you are talking about the best striker and TD + GNP guy in the game at 205 there I think the confidence issue was perfectly displayed in his cautious 1st two rounds with Page, but the fact that he's still a force was shown by the 3rd, which was as good a beatdown as anyone has put on an admittedly declining Jackson. And him shouting ''Karate is back'' post fight after Randy is an indication that he had done some soul searching with regards as to his style How he rebounds against Jones mentally remains to be seen, but physically he still has all the tools
lol come on now. Lyoto lost to shogun twice. The real reason he's not doing good anymore is because he's not facing glass jawed tomato cans like Rashad "glass jaw" Evans
Id say the same personally, but he wasnt severely outclassed in the 1st, he was worn down. But the record stands at 1-1 and the main point being he's only lost to Shogun and Bones legitimately
He legitimately lost to Jackson as well. Not saying he didn't win the fight as a whole but the first two rounds were close enough that I wouldn't argue if you scored it for Rampage. The fact that it was so close against a fighter who really hasn't impressed against top opposition in eons is troublesome. But I think you pretty much nailed - people figures out his style and he's low on confidence. I doubt he has the mental strength to get out of the funk.
Lyoto Machida proves that karate is a myth in MMA and will never be successful unless u fight bums through out ur carreer, it also proves that "ONE HIT WONDERS" exists in MMA, as i consider him that.
Absolutely nothing is wrong with Lyto physically. If he was done then the Shogun fights would have finished him but we can see against Couture and Rampage that he is still sharp. Where he is at mentally is questionable.
something i've wanted to know for a while: why is karate crap in mma? what is machida's karate influence in his fighting?
It is a myth. GSP, Chuck, Lyoto all respect their karate backgrounds. Karata offers a lot for distance, kicks, fast strikes etc The only difference I see in all fighters who strike is they quickly realise that boxing is irrefutably the best way to punch thus the Muay Thai and Karate hand positioning and striking isn't really apparent.
I can see a Machida versus Davies match being interesting. I don't think he is "past it" He has just been going up against some of the very best fighters in the world.
