Do you consider the manner in which he lost to taint his boxing legacy?? A lot of people seem to think he came for the payday and had no intention of trying to win?? Do you consider this the truth or was he just hopelessly outmatched?

It only affects him in heavyweight standings, and consider the swathe Tyson was cutting and where Spinks had come from it's not that bad.

Eddie Futch was pissed with Spinks because he was supposed to move and fight safe for the first portion of the fight but instead, in the words of Futch, slugged it out. Not much of a slugging effort but Futch's words certainly tell us he tried. Spinks was no quitter. He faced a monumental and more than slightly rightening task in moving all the way to heavyweight and taking on Holmes for starters.

Remember Holmes hurt Spinks with a couple of single punches, one to the top of the head rocked him badly and Holmes was no single punch hitter.

It was a case of a bit of ring rust, a bit of knee trouble and being hopelessly outclassed at any rate. Spinks said he was shocked at how big Tyson actually is and how shockingly fast he was. I think a Frazier may have blown Spinks out as well in say 3-5 rounds. IMO he is going to struggle with the power of hard punching fully fledged heavies, no shame for a fattened up 175.

Yes. It lasted 91 seconds. Spinks did not come back. I believe boxing fans will remember the Tyson fight more than the rest of Spinks career. Its a shame, but its true.

Amongst hardcore fans, I don't think so. They recognise Spinks' exploits at the lighter weight and his fights with Holmes.

But for most people, that casual audience out there, I really feel it is.
Because for almost all of them, those 91 seconds vs Tyson will be the standout memory.

Spinks should have made a better effort and had some confidence.
All credit to Tyson though, he came at Spinks with muderous speed and intent.

Spinks beat Holmes, and several very good light-heavyweights.
He was undisputed champion at light-heavy, and the "linear" champion at heavyweight.
The first reigning world light-heavy champion to capture the heavyweight crown. Where Carpentier, Conn, Moore, Foster and others had failed Spinks succeded, against a very good heavyweight champion too !

    Spinks' legacy is secure.

why do you think spinks never came back at 31 you'd think he still had a few years and big fights left

It shouldn't taint his legacy. He lost to the best HW of his era by knockout as so many before him did.

To the casual fan, I would say that he was "exposed by Tyson" or something along those lines.

But to me, Michael Spinks won Olympic Gold at middleweight and championships at LHW and HW and a good resume.

So, a small HW loses to a natural HW and the best HW of his era and that's going to taint his legacy? Nah.

michael spinks earned 100,000 dollars for that fight, so im sure it wasn't for the money.

he was just defeated, career ending.

Actually, every time I watch the Tyson-Spinks fight I am shocked (or surprised) by HOW BIG SPINKS IS.
    Same with the Cooney-Spinks match.

Spinks at heavyweight was quite beefy, he'd packed on some solid muscle training with Mackie Shiltstone, and at almost 6'3 he had the frame to carry it.

Psychologically, a fighter can easily imagine the other guys is loads bigger than him, that's negative thoughts, a lack of confidence.

If you have 91 spare seconds pop the fight on, and have a look at Spinks' size again. He's a decent-sized heavyweight.

Or check out the Cooney fight. Cooney was a giant, and Spinks looks broad and thick against him too.

Yeah, this was the biggest-grossing fight of all-time at the time.

Tyson got between 21 and 23 million dollars for his work.
