Yes, his legacy is tainted from that. 91 seconds would put a cloud over anyone's legacy. Too bad, up to that point he accomplished so much and was relatively unappreciated. So many people give Leonard all the credit in the world for beating Haglar, but not nearly as many give Spinks credit for beating Holmes.

One poster ranked Spinks #3 greatest LHW alltime. If he beat Tyson and retired, he would probably be the #1 ranked ATG LHW although that would have had nothing to do with his LHW record.

More importantly, look at how scared Spinks is. One of my clearest memories from watching that fight was hearing someone in the bar yelling, "Jesus, he's scared to death," before the first bell rang.

    dayum.

21-23 million dollars, a rematch against holyfield would probably give tyson enough money to pay half of his 25 million dollars debt.

It certainly didn't improve his legacy.

there was a big sense of fear in the whole spinks camp butch lewis didnt want to pair him with tyson in the unification series. I think spinks whole camp didnt believe he would win.

    Spot on....

The Tyson fight needs to be recognized by the Hardcore fan as well, it did show up all of Spinks' flaws, in the same way Qawi showed his amazing strengths.

Spinks is very easy to rate, because of them two black and white fights. And he is, and should be rated very highly because the vast majority of the rest of his fights were are lot nearer the quality of the Qawi fight than the Tyson fight.

As a Heavyweight yes. But he still will be considered one of the greatest LightHeavyweight Champions of all time. Which is not too bad, other lightHeavyweight Champs failed in the Heavyweight ranks, Archie Moore, Bob Foster, Ezzard Charles. It's A huge gap from Lightheavy to heavywieght.

Charles was not ever a Light Heavyweight Champion;)

And there is no fair way Charles and indeed Moore could be described as having failed Heavyweight careers.:good

No, I don't think so. The sad part is, I was actually rooting for him to win this fight, but in retrospect, Tyson was too much for him.

I think it does only because they show the fight all the time on Classic

I am not sure they have shown any other Spinks fights on the network

Spinks should be remembered for his great career at light heavyweight and stopping Holmes from tying

the most important record in boxing

Failed in the sense that they were dominate LightHeavyweight Champions & were knocked out in Heavyweight title bouts, Moore knocked out by Marciano, Foster knocked out by Frazier & Ali. As far as Ezzard Charles is concerned. Ring Magazine had him rated as one of the Greatest LightHeavyweights of all time. Billy Conn also stepped up & almost pulled it off against Joe Louis. & if Toney and Jones faced top notch competition at Heavyweight there chances would have been slim also. A blubbery Toney facing Frazier, Tyson Or Ali would have been a massacre.

I'd love to clear 22 million for a relatively light day at the office.

Spinks losing to Tyson IMO confirms that to some fans hav the "you're only as good as your last fight" syndrome. Spinks at LHW was great, in fact I have him in my top 3 with Foster and Moore (I have Charles at 4).

When assesing Spinks's career look at his record pre Tyson and you'll find an ATG.
