Is his name as well known as Tyson or De La Hoya to the general public? In the UK must be close after the Hatton fight?
well i will say this much, he is one of the most renowned boxers in the world at the moment.....but does he have staying power in the main-stream yet?....like a de la hoya or tyson? I would say no
Absolutely not. Oscar was special because of his looks, smile and incredible post-Olympic hype, but super popular fighters were controversial HWs most of the time (Tyson, Ali), rarely smaller fighters with an exciting style. Star power just doesn't come with sport accomplishments, the person outside of the sport activity has to be something special to get the general population's attention. PacMan is 'just' an incredible fighter, but not the crossover star material outside. He struggles with the English, too respectful, doesn't spend a lot of time in the US or appear in top rated shows, not making headlines for whatever he does, leaves his personal life out of the media, never really became an icon or a controversial figure in the US. He's just not the De La Hoya or Tyson type. He's the true boxing fan's star, and that's enough for me.
I'd say most casual fans now know who he is. Then again, boxing isn't one of the major sports over here in the UK- it has a niche following but if you asked the man on the street to name a boxer other than one of our own I'm sure they wouldn't plump for Pacqiuao. The names would obviously be Ali, Tyson, ODLH and considering the hype generated for the Hatton fight by the media, then maybe PBF may get a shout as well.
hmm says... made Time Magazine, Forbes already, and a number of sports magazines... Also, when he got his BWAA year award, he was supposed to appear on Good Morning America or something like that (he would've gotten a great load of recognition for that). I'll say he's getting there... but not in terms of a DLH but more of a pseudo Ali (cause he's a sportsman and does a lot outside the ring).
I think he could potentially become so. Especially with a victory over PBF - that kind of Bruce Lee factor - the quiet kick ass Asian with the million dollar smile. But for sure I know it would be a hell of an accomplishment for a lightweight pinoy boxer to achieve certifiable worldwide fame!
He's getting there. All of my guy friends who aren't into boxing know who he is after he KO'd Hatton, however if i asked any of my girl mates they wouldn't have a ****ing clue who i was on about barring one or two who have heard us talking about him before and even then they would just know that he's a boxer. On the other hand, every one of my friends would be able to tell you a bit about Tyson, De La Hoya and Hatton.
Not in the UK, he isn't charismatic enough or do enough trash-talking. People may vaguely remember him for destroying Hatton but like another poster said your average punter in the street here is more likely to remember Mayweather.
Maybe in Asia but not in the west a few more people might have heard of him after the Hatton win but not many. The average non boxing fan over here doesnt know who he is
I think the average sports fan does. As i said above, i've got mates who aren't into boxing at all but they are really into football, tennis, rugby etc and they all know who Manny Pacquiao is. The only other non-british active boxer they could tell you about since Oscar retired is Mayweather.
