Okay, that might be an exageration, but what really has he done? He took Tommy Hearns, a guy that was a boxer in the amatuers and supposedly made him a huge puncher in the pros. Okay, but wasn't Trinidad a boxer in the amateurs and then a huge puncher in the pros? He still had his pops training him. Look fellas, when the headgear comes off, it's a whole different game. So other than Hearns, who was destined to be great no matter who trained him, what other fighter did Steward take from the ground up? Exactly...... Let's look at his present status: He turned Klitschko, a former offensive powerhouse, and turned him into a mechanical jabbing robot with no inside game aside from a clinch. So it's jab-jab-clinch. He took, Cintron, and supposedly improved his game, but ever since Manny took over Cintron has been going life and death with fighters. Don't be surprised if he tries to clinch with Margarito and finds himself looking up at the canvass or quiting on his stool. *You don't clinch with Margarito, you will get uppercutted. He took Andy Lee, supposedly some kind of a mega prospect, and didn't teach him how to fight on the inside. It's like all of his fighters neglect inside fighting. They just clinch when they get on the inside. He's destroying these fighters. Anyone else see the pattern? Don't get me wrong, I like to listen to his analysis and I think he's a smart guy, but he needs to teach his kids to fight on the inside.
I thought I was the only one to take notice of what you are saying. You are 100% right on the money. Just look what happen to vivian Harris ????? it makes me wonder when are his fighters are going to wake up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:huh :huh :huh Good Post........M.R. :rasta N.Y.C.
And I saw shades of Taylor when Andy Lee fought. I am thinking he had one success and is trying to cram everyone into one mold instead of working to a fighters natural strengths?
Doug Fischer is going to finish changing a diaper, then come to your house and beat you down. Manny hasn't done much for his charges lately, we can say that much.
I wouldn't exactly say he's ruining Boxing. But I think he makes fighters more safety first than anything. Kermit Cintron and Wlad both were much more dynamic offensive fighters prior to Manny coming into the picture. Go watch a fight like Cintron vs. Teddy Reid and see how much more fluid his punches were opposed to now where he seems stiff, robotic, and predictable.
I think he did a good job helping Lennox Lewis with his balance problems and how he was so open when he threw the right hand (Manny helped Oliver McCall pick up on this mistake in the first place). Steward also did a good job with Holyfield in the Bowe rematch. Good game plan. Manny is past his prime though, and as far as his commentating goes, he's so-so. If one of Manny's fighters gets KO'd, I'd like for Max or Larry or whomever to say "This has happened just like I expected it to".
I loved when Shane was turning Vargas into Shrek, and he kept saying there was no power in his punches. Manny doesn't hide his beefs all that well.
Good post, thought provoking. Could it really be so? How would you rate Taylor's second showing against Pavlik? Was it that he wanted to kick ass really badly only, or was it his training that was better (or both). Interesting. I'm a Klitchko fan and honestly this insight could explain his last bout. Thanks!
as long as he does not work as comentator for hbo anymore i will be pleased i whish they put back roy jones or gerge foreman
