I wouldn't necessarily say Taylor's conditioning was superior, but his gameplan, defense, and general ring presence were so much better it was scary. And he still lost. But you have to give Ozell Nelson credit for at least some of the improvement. Without getting into a Klitschko war, I think he needs Steward way more than Taylor did. Even though it wasn't (and isn't) always pretty, Jermain had a style that he was already comfortable and successful with before hooking up with Steward. Wlad's talent was similar, but the mistakes he was making weren't just bad habits, they were fight ending bad habits. Wlad is a great match for Steward. He's naturally more of a safety first fighter, he's got the perfect physical tools to match Manny's style, and he's the kind of fighter who really wants to study the technical aspects of the game. Where some guys would try to come out brawling after a bout like the one with Ibragimov, I'd expect Wlad to go back to the drawing boards, and very scientifically consider how and when he will throw his right hand in the future against lefties. Manny's description of Jermain as an "instinct fighter" seems fair to me, although it does deflect the issue of why a guy with world class "instincts" couldn't gain a damn thing out of his teaching. :think
I don't think he's ruining boxing, but he's pretty useless as a commentator, and seems to be antiquated on his training. Lately, his fighters just haven't had the kind of progression one would expect. As for what he's done in the past, he did manage to turn Lennox Lewis from a decent contender into an ATG with a complete style overhaul, and he's gotten Klitschko to adopt a style where he's much harder to beat.
HE has not had very good luck lately. That could also be the fighters fault though. I remember watching him in Taylors fight yelling at him to attack and be more aggresive but he didnt. Same with Klitschko and Ibragimov. He kept telling him to attack but they did not listen. I think its his fighters.
