At his best, he simply was the best in my eyes.

You can’t outbox the greatest, you can’t knockout the greatest, end of discussion really.

He was the perfect champion to inhabit the Eisenhower Era. Fanboyism was embraced then, heroes were manufactured and allowed to stand unmolested by the fashionable dissention so prominent now.

Neither extreme is correct or fair, but that's how we roll.

Not sure about that. Marciano was criticized quite a bit by the boxing press in his own time.

It was the generation after in the 60s and 70s that seemed to have the most nostalgia for him. It was fighters like Frazier, Ali, and Foreman that seemed to hold him in the highest esteem.

Just like the 90s and early 00s are presently getting hero worshipped.

I wasn't alive then to verify personally, but that runs contrary to what I've read in books like The Rock of His Times" by Russell Sullivan.

I mean, no champion is ever universally lauded, but from what I understand he was rather highly thought of by the public at large.

The question is why are you comparing him with fighters who wouldn't even be in his weight class?

Except when Frazier beat him for the first time?

What do people not get about this?

The heavyweight division is about fighting all comers, regardless of their weight.

If you win the title in that weight class, the accomplishment is not invalidated, based upon what you weigh!

Marciano did what he did, long after men like Jess Willard, and Primo Carnera, were a feature of the division!

The facts are he wouldn't be a HW today though!

Lennox Lewis is the best head to head heavyweight WHEN HE WAS ON HIS GAME IN HIS PRIME, and if things carry on like this, it’s shaping up to be Tyson Fury
People may think this is a controversial opinion, but there are many reasons for this

    Why is that even relevant?

Does he get some retrospective protection because of that?

Lewis has the skill, size, chin(yes I said chin), and power to compete with any heavyweight in any era. I’m not sold on fury yet

    Are you for real?

    Why is that relevant?

Stop and have a think about it, why do you think there's such thing as a CW?

Why not just keep it as it was?

I'll say it again, if Marciano appeared today he would not be a HW.
