If you say yes then please tell me how he can possibly be ahead of Williams?

    No.

Paul Williams beat him one year ago.

What made Cotto #1? Beating Shane?

Corrie Sanders also beat Wlad when Wlad was #1. That didn't make Sanders the new #1.

Margarito can't be #1 because there is a man who beat him toe-to-toe not so long ago.

Don't hate. He is the number one guy.

H2H Williams has a razor thin victory over him. And Williams looked the loser coming away from that fight.

In accomplishments Margarito has him beat easy. Williams has one name on his resume that matters, Margarito. Margarito has two names on his resume that matter, Cotto and Cintron. And he brutalized both.

The CHAMPIONSHIP is vacant. Either vacated because the previous champ retired; or you could argue that once PBF retired Cotto became the new champ, although I don't subscribe to this view...

The number 1 contendor is Margarito (a fighter can still elevate over another fighter who beat them by winning bigger fights - as is the case here).

Williams is a VERY close number 2.

If Marg doesn't get the Dela Hoya fight next, the obvious fight is Marg-Williams 2.

Williams is number 1 ... there's no way that Margarito goes from #5 to #1 in one fight.

The thread title says "NOW" not 1 year ago.

Williams can't win it by default.

Margarito beat the man yesterday so HE IS THE MAN NOW:deal

Yes he is. Paul doesn't just assume the position because he's previously beaten Margo.

Williams has lost since the Margarito fight, and against an opponent who he never should have lost to

In the same span Margarito is 3-0 with two decisive KO wins against a pair of titlists

When you lose a fight, you don't get to automatically remain ranked ahead of everyone you've beaten. Boxing has never worked that way, I don't see why people are trying to make an exception in this case

Cotto wasn't the man. He was the number 1 contendor. The man only retired a few months ago, leaving the spot vacant.

Marg's the number 1 contendor, so as the championship is vacant, it makes him the highest ranked WW. JUST ahead of Williams at number 2.

I'll say my opinion whenever him and Williams have there rematch...
Only thing I didn't like about Marg is I heard him repeat De la Hoya's name....Didn't hear him mention Williams.
