And Hagler had 14 title bouts between 1980 and 1987 ... so, again, I don't know how that makes Hagler the LAZY or "reclining" champion.

One less title fight over seven years?

Well, Monzon only had one title fight in 1976 and one in 1977, so Marvin must've picked up his laziness from Monzon, right Saintpat? ;)

Maybe Monzon started it with his bad example of one fight a year?

Carlos Monzon was making western movies in 1976 and 1977, he started in the silver screen in his native Argentina in 1975, he was financially set. His manager Tito Lectoure always put most of his earnings away for him after each bout, remember the highest purse back then was about $500,000 dollars, he usually fought in Italy or France, they took out less taxes, the U.S was heavy on the taxes, Monzon only had one title defense here in the U.S in Madison Square Garden on June 30 1975, a TKO 10 of challenger Tony Licata. Monzon's lifelong trainer Amilcar Brusa always scouted out Monzon's future opponents, together they always planned out the right strategy.

Marvin Hagler also made films. He co-starred in action films in Italy when he retired and, when he would return to the States on occasion, he always had an Italian accent.

Marvin was also financially set for life with the $18 million he made from the Leonard fight.

    Finally, Marvin divorced his wife.

What did Monzon do with his? (I guess that's another thread altogether.).

This is feeling a bit like the comparisons between Kennedy and Lincoln. (Kennedy's assasin shot him in from a warehouse and ran to a theater, Lincoln's shot him in a theater and ran to a warehouse/Both had a vice president named Johnson/Kennedy had a secretary whose last name was Lincoln and Lincoln had a secretary whose last name was Kennedy) ...

Bottom line, neither started the trend of defending ONE time a year.

Correct me if I am wrong, But Hagler started making movies in Italy following his title loss to come backing Sugar Ray Leonard on April 6 1987, I believe Monzon was making movies in 1975 in his native Argentina prior to his announced retirement in August 1977.

They could have forever settled the question of greatest middleweight champion in a cinematic gunfight, and set it in neutral territory in Africa or China.
