Am I missing something? His opponents are often considered shot, old, past prime, whatever. Do people not realize that Floyd has been past prime for nearly a decade now? Do people think he's still prime? Just because he's much better than his opponent at 38, doesn't mean he's still prime, or they're shot, or they're old, etc. He just makes them look that way. Which is why they're not considered shot, old, green, past prime until they're signed to fight him or a Floyd candidate. Convenient timing for these claims.
He's definitely not prime. It's just, his "not prime" is usually better than most other fighters "prime"

It all varies from fighter to fighter, but usually they enter their prime around their 4th-5th year as a pro and start to come off a decline within the next 2 or 3 years. For the GREAT one's, they could probably have a prime extended for an extra year or 2. So I essentially peg the beginning of FLoyd's absolute prime around the time he took on Chico (2001- 5th year as a pro,) and he started coming down from his prime after the Gatti fight (2005- 9th year as a pro.) If you see him in that timeline, his speed, combination punching, footwork, reflexes and reaction time were all at an all time high. The only thing he's clearly superior now in is his boxing IQ, and that's primarily due to all the ring experience he's accrued since he's been falling out of his prime. So essentially, you can make a case by the time he ventured up to WW, he was already starting to slowly decline and was outside of his prime by than.
The difference between Calzaghe and Mayweather is that Mayweather didn't lie about his air-sickness only to recover when his target opponents officially became grandfathers and over 5 years past their primes. Mayweather didn't feast on bums in clubs throughout his entire career nor did he roll on the floor in tears of disbelief after 40 professional fights for beating someone with 21 professional fights. Last but not least, Mayweather will never be as irrelevant and unknown as Calzaghe is.

Prime has nothing to do with age, if your experience and what you learn makes up for the athleticism you have lost with age then you are still prime...in many cases with these defensive guru's they actually improve with age. In this case there is nothing that tells me that Mayweather absolutely cannot be prime.

Not physically, at least. It's mostly his ring IQ carrying him now. He still has exceptional speed and timing though he does screw up on those on rare occasions.
