Should it be considered a really great event?

    Is it similar to...

    Dempsey-Tunney
    Ali-Frazier
    Leonard-Duran
    Leonard-Hearns
    Hearns-Hagler
    Hagler-Leonard
    Chavez-Taylor
    Chavez-Whitaker
    De la Hoya-Trinidad
    Tyson-Lewis

Simply by the numbers it had and the records it broke, I think DelaHoya-Mayweather was also one of the big fights in history.

Not really. I certainly hope it's not as one-sided as Tunney-Dempsey. :hey

No, most of those fights were between two very established all-time GREAT fighters... although admittably not always in their prime.

While big, definately not the same league. Floyd-Oscar tops it for biggest fight of the year, even.

And furthermore, I know you were talking mainly about hype, but you would sorta have to see how the fight turns out in the end, too... Cause imagine if Floyd-Oscar was like Hagler-Hearns? It'd be HUGE.

ODLH vs Mayweather was not one of the biggest fights in history in terms of significance, like the other ones you posted. You can add Calzaghe - Kessler and Hatton - Mayweather as the big fights of this time but nowhere near an Ali - Frazier or Leonard - Duran.

I think Hatton - Mayweather is more significant than the De La Hoya fight. Oscar is box office but the most significant thing about the whole affair was that Floyd proved he coudl fight well above his weight and comfort zone and still prevail convincingly.

This is a fight to see who the man is at Welter, or at least to discern who shall fight Cotto for that honour.

I dont think so. Remember all the PPV buys and how great the Hoya-mayweather fight was going to be and that wasnt anything special. I think these 24/7 hbo specials is whats driving these fights to act as if they are mega--when they could be sub-par---case in point Hoya/Mayweather. JMO.

Unfortunately fights involving Mayweather are not always entertaining. Not according to my taste anyways. I do agree that it is a big fight though.

Floyd vs. Hatton is not between two Great fighters? Give me a break. Floyd is already established very high on that list, and the undefeated Hatton certainly has a shot at it before he's done. Head to head he probably cleans up a lot of the list.

Why is it nothing like Leonard vs. Duran?

Edit: I think that is exactly what it is like.

That's right. If Hatton wins this will be guaranteed to be an all-time fight to remember. If he can subdue Mayweather, it will be the first time we've seen Mayweather handled by anyone.

How the fight turns out has a lot to do with it.
