Mao Tse Tung had long spouted the Afro-American experience among his anti-US-imperialism propaganda, so black American dissenters received coverage.

Muhammad Ali was known in China, and visited in 1979 and met the premier Deng and all the commie leaders.


Ali fought in Japan.
He also fought a Japanese wrestler in Japan, in a massive event.

Japan's economic miracle happened in the 1950s and '60s.

I think the joke of "Made in Japan" and later "Made in China" was more to do with the shocking reality the West had to deal with the fact that they were losing a large share of the global manufacturing sector and relied on Asia to produce plastic goods and electronic goods.

Certainly to the old colonial powers, such as Britain, the emergence of goods "made in Japan" and "made in China" at the same time as disappearing British manufacturing was a little bit strange for people brought up on a superiority complex.
Just my theory though. And slightly off topic.

It's definitely remotely close or better. There's absolutely no question that it's at least remotely close.

It's possibly not even a s big as Chavez / Haugan with over 130, 000 spectators, and probably televised in most of the Spanish speaking world.
