No, in terms of technicque, he is not. He is technically one of the best fighters ever, but he drops his hands and keeps his chin high in the air when punching. He also pulls straight back from shots, but he has the reflexes and speed to get away with it. In terms of textbook technique, Juan Manuel Marquez and Ricardo Lopez are better than Mayweather.

Whitaker dropped his hands even more than Mayweather, though it was effective. His output dropped as he moved up in weight as well.

Lopez perhaps....less technically sound IMO defensively.

Floyd could fart and people would clap.

As for the thread question: He's technically great, but sometimes it isn't all about technique. He lacks excitement because he's constantly on the backfoot and seems to be scared of coming forward, preferring a safe victory instead.

    *yawn*

Wake me up when something happens.

People are saying a fault in Floyd's technique is that he drops his hands. He only does this because he knows he cant be hit, and I think as a lure so that when a fighter takes a shot he can counter punch. Not really a technical flaw, being that its intentional. Muhammad Ali for instance dropped his guard out of habit not to counter punch.

His speed and reflexes make it tough to exploit any flaws.

Dont like the way you put Hopkins in with Mayweather, Hopkins is effective in what he does but lets remember he ruled the weakest middleweight division in history and made his name by beating 'Name' welterweights who had no record at Middle .... Mayweather on the other hand is a 5 weight world champion who has proved he can fight in many different ways .. Whether he is the most flawless fighter ever in terms of technique is impossible to say because depending on how skilled your opponent is depends on how many mistakes you make and i'd say someone like Sugar Ray Leonard fought far more skilled opposition than Floyd, if Floyd had to take on the Benitez, Hearns and Duran that Ray had to take on then you would see far more mistakes from Floyd due to the level of his opponent .. Im not taking anything away from Floyd but theres never really been anybody good enough to really test him to the fullest

Floyd is absolutely beautiful to watch as a boxing fan, in the same way as Pernell Whitaker was .... Its up to the opponent to be good enough to beat Floyd, he fights the way he fights, i understand what you mean, other brilliant boxers like Robinson, Leonard and Pryor were never afraid to mix it but Floyd doesnt owe it to anybody to take punches in much the same way as Lennox Lewis never mixed it and he too was a highly skilled boxer

Thats a great post, Marquez is a highly under appreciated fighter, that guy is text book and if you were teaching young kids how to be a boxer then Marquez is a fighter you would show them

No, he is not the most technically superior fighter ever. He has wonderful defense, but in the middle of the ring he turns his head.

Ray Leonard was wonderful. He is above Mayweather. Hopkins is up there too.

De la Hoya ALWAYS had stamina problems. Mayweather knew this.

But still, his point was that if you showed a young kid how to box, the fighter you would show them is Juan Manuel Marquez - not Floyd Mayweather. He's a perfect textbook boxer. Every punch is thrown perfectly and his stance/balance is absolutely great.
