I don't mind his fight with Hopkins. The Jones fight is what bothers me. If I'm not mistaken didn't he say in his book that he wouldn't fight Jones because it would do nothing for his legacy?

It's not that Jones was just old; he was shot to pieces. By the time Calzaghe got to him he had been brutally KO'd by Tarver and had been starched cold by Glen Johnson who's not a big puncher. Roy had recently had a 3 fight losing streak, but "turned it around" with a 3 fight win streak against weak competition before Calzaghe. That fight really does nothing for Calzaghe's legacy.

roy got pleny of shots off, even dropping calzaghe.and yes it was because of calzaghe's combo punching that jones did'nt fight back so much.if he had he would of got knocked out due to his crap chin.

Thing is DM was the champ, Jones his challenger it would have been Jones who should have made the fight happen - either by going to Germany or by offer enough money to get DM ot the US. It didn“t happen. Very sad.

    Good observation.

Yeah but those two were even older, and the older one of them actually beat Joe C.

    IMO DM ranks above Calzaghe.

Joe said in his book that Jones was shot. He then reneged on that because he got offered a few million for the fight and promptly booted Warren into touch. Apart from being a "comfort zone" fighter the bloke was an absolute c**t. Joe has never had a good word to say about anyone.

calzaghe did say in his book he would'nt fight jones because he's shot yes,but at that time he did look shot to bits.after getting knocked out in the second tarver fight, 5 months later he got in the ring with johnson with his mind not right.it was sheer pride that put him there and he payed the price by getting dominated and knocked out again.all johnson had to do was take it to jones with pressure to take his confidence away early and he did.he then stupidly had a 3rd fight with tarver straight after and was never going to win coz his mind was messed up big time.what he needed to do was get a few wins under his belt against lower competition to get his confidence back and that's what he did before calzaghe.was he in his prime against calzaghe? no.did he look shot to bits?no.was it a better jones than the one in the johnson and 3rd tarver fights?yes. i'm not saying it was the best win because it's not but jones put up a pretty good fight that night and it was a decent win for calzaghe.

Calzaghe was a faster, more versatile fighter than DM.

DM was more similar to Mikkel Kessler - an orthodox, European style fighter with a strong jab and a decent right hand.

Having said that, Calzaghe - DM is a close fight because of DM's natural size and strength advantage

If Michalczewski didnt fight his last 2 fights and retired instead he would have been 46 and 0.

    DM beats LHW Calzaghe

    but Calzaghe ranks higher overall
