This is the biggest ****ing MYTH of the whole DM fiasco.

If that was the case, WHY would the WBA even sancton a title fight with their champion fighting the WBO champion. It doesn't make any sense at all, and has been used by DM fans as a crutch to defend him dropping 2 more prestigious titles in favor of the dubious WBO. (and no matter what you say, in 96-97, the WBO was a joke organization.)

IF Hill won, he would be the WBO and WBA champ, so what are they going to do, strip Hill then?? Just for being champ of both.

It's a ridiculous argument, one that didn't come around for about 5 years AFTER the event.

The fact is Lou Del Valle was scheduled to fight Eddy Smulders in Aachen Germany in order to hype/promote the first title defense for DM. At that DM decided to drop the belt instead of fight EITHER one.

Instead he took on the great Nicky Piper.

He dropped the IBF straight off as the mandatory was already set, and it was hard hitting William Guthrie.

So no Lou Del Valle, no William Guthrie, he chose the easiest path, and the path that was going to let him fight in Germany forever, the WBO and Nicky Piper and Darren Zenner, 4 and 6 months after the Hill fight.

Can anyone provide a source that Jones vacated the WBC belt at ALL???

The WBC did ****, up granted, it ASSUMED Jones wa leaving the division, thus labeling Rocco and Nunn a championship fight.

Regardless, Rocco had a chance to rectify it in the ring, and chose not to.

At least DM knows when to pack up his tent and move along. RJ has no such instinct and is embarassing himself by the day. Its precisely because of this reason why DM's resume ought to be looked at more favorably. Why people ignore a fighter's latter fighting years completly and only focus on prime time, is stupid when it comes to the question of who had a better overall career.

Don't forget Jirov. Jones also never got around to fighting Toney until it started to become evident that Toney was having difficulty making weight at 168.

Yeah, why don't we just discredit everything the man has done, and blame him for not fighting every other fighter that was alive at the time.:patsch

That was also only Roy's 5th year as a pro, his second weight class, and only 26th or so fight... I don't know how much earlier you would want him to fight him.

I enjoyed Roy's career as much as anyone and considered him the best of his era. However he was notorious for avoiding dangerous opponents. His meetings with HBO execs were well publicized. They were the ones to give him the nick name Chicken Jones. Take what you want from the mans career, he was a phenominal talent no doubt. But in all honesty he didn't fight the absolute best possible and it's questionable to whether he was that willing to do so. He even picked the least talented of the heavy weight title holders. Everybody expected him steam roll Tarver after Tarver struggled with Harding the first fight, then got dropped by an old Reggie Johnson.

where are these tremendous fighters he avoided? his prime happened to come at the end of the greatest era of super middleweights and a weak era of light heavies. we must have slept through this torrent of all time greats that came through his divisions

because DM didn't keep fighting past prime he's better? we shouldn't just discount latter career loses but we need to take them into context.

and jones takes a **** on DM's resume

The best possible??? Toney and Hopkins were better than ANY fighter that was listed that Jones didn't fight. So what If he picked Ruiz, why do people criticize him for not fighting Lewis? That is not even realistic, come-on.

It pisses me off that Pac does the same thing selecting opponents but gets praised, and Jones gets dogged for not committing suicide against Lewis. Say what you want about Ruiz, but that was a risky fight for Roy and Roy's win gets underrated because everyone hates Ruiz.

And had Jones picked Byrd, I can hear it now, critics would be saying Jones handpicked a defensive minded heavyweight without a lot of power that Jones knew would fight his fight.
