Look, I know Mickey Walker is a phenomenal boxer who fought from welterweight to heavyweight, never ducking a challenge from the bigger men. In fact, I rate him within the top 15 greatest boxers pound for pound. This is my opinion and someone correct me if I'm wrong but I dont know if Mickey Walker did enough at middleweight to earn a top 10 spot at middleweight. Let's break down his middleweight career. So he fought lineal champ Tiger Flowers (Top 3 middleweight by Ring Magazine at the time) and "won" but when I see accounts of the fight, I often hear that for most of the fight, Walker was outpointed by Flowers and that Flowers was robbed. I also hear accounts of Flowers outboxing Walker but then being knocked down a bunch of times in the later rounds and Walker made it a closer fight only in the end. I dont know but I dont know which account to believe at the moment. In addition, the contenders he fought were Bert Colima (#8 rated contender), Jock Malone (#8 rated contender), Tommy Milligan (#9 rated contender), Ace Hudkins (#8 rated contender), and Cowboy Jack Willis (#10 rated contender). That was a lot of contenders he fought and he havent been defeated at middleweight but he didn't fight the top rated contenders like Top 3 of his time like Len Harvey, Dave Shade at middleweight, Rene DeVos, and a rematch with Tiger Flowers. Walker is a p4p talent but his resume at middleweight seems thin and doesn't seem right being in the Top 10 Spot. I believe Walker still deserves a spot at being a top 20 middleweight purely on his dominance alone and not having his lineal middleweight title taken from him but that's like it. If someone knows more than me about Mickey Walker at middleweight, comment below.
Well he cracked the top 10 (#9) at MW in https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/top-35-all-time-reveal-boxing-survey-series.653021/page-18 And was named in the top 15 on 13 of 24 lists. So as far as classic goes it appears slightly more than half find that he is or at least warrants consideration, while just under half do not.
Walker would be included somewhere in the top 20 imo, roughly, but there are too many contenders who dominated (or competed in an extremely strong Middleweight division), so it is hard to put Walker above them, as much as I love him.
Some here are not too swift.....walker would have slaughtered most of the chumps any dope would try to rate above him
How would you know that? How many times you actually SAW Walker fight. How many that saw him fight, saw Monzon? Or Hagler? Your basing your opinion on what writers of that era wrote, most if not all of those writers were dead by the time Monzon came along, and especially Hagler. Not anything concrete like film. I will say based on what has been written on Walker he was the best of his day. That's no small accomplishment. But theirs too much information missing to have a opinion based on tangible evidence on if he's a top ten Middleweight. For all we know he could be the the very best, or not in the top 20 . So to call others "dopes" or write " He would slaughter most of the Middleweights named" is only based on your romanticize point of view on Walker, and not based on anything in reality. Your opinion is based on what someone said, not what you saw .
