    Dear Friends
    kind regards
Today I am combining a general question with the Step back in time series.
During this thread, we will highlight many of Mike Tyson's matches.
Here is Mike Tyson destroying Michael Spinks.

The questions that I put to you are the following.
    1. Do you think that Mike Tyson is the greatest heavyweight ever and why?
    2. If Tyson isn't the greatest, how highly do you rank him?
    3. What were Mike Tyson's greatest assets in the ring that set him apart from every other heavyweight?
If you could give me your opinions A.S.A.P I'd appreciate it.
    yours thankfully
    John

    Head to Head, top5.
The Greatest however, is Muhammad Ali.

    1). No
    2). Top 15
3). Young Mike Tyson was very fast with great head movement. His speed combined with punching power was a devastating weapon. The older version had mostly the intimidation factor going for him.

No where near the greatest heavyweight of all time. He had the potential to be one of the best but was a head case so he couldnt fulfil his potential. Id have at least 25 people above him in heavyweight rankings.

His greatest assets were his ability to intimidate and create fear (as shown in the video above where Spinks was afraid to throw a punch) and his explosive one punch power that could knock down the most iron-chinned heavyweights

Not having him in the top10 is not justice though, he deserves to be in the top10.

Head to head, he's simply amazing.. and his run in the late '80s is vastly underrated by some of the new boxing fans these days that didn't experience it, like myself. But having seen all his fights and hours upon hours of recorded interviews/prefight media coverege... I can honestly say he was a beast.

    edit: answer to Q#3.
his being a one punch assassin and that beautiful uppercut; and his ability to close the gap while working his way under and aroudn the punches

Mike Tyson was one of those boxers where one punch could end it all instantly.
    Keep your opinions coming.

Here is Mike Tyson's utter dismantling of Pinklon Thomas.

    [YT]Xt2waqpyEHw[/YT]

Mike Tyson completely picked Pinklon Thomas apart, it should be pointed out that Thomas was a good boxer, but was relegated to a much lower standard by Tyson's complete superiority.
Tyson's finishing combination on Thomas was absolutely crushing.

    Most definitley.
He could have been ranked up there had he stayed focused and also not gone to jail. He will always be remembered as what could have been. However, I'll take Tyson over the top ATG Heavy's in his prime, but that prime was for a very short period of time.

    Dear pelican
    kind regards
I regard Mike Tyson as a top 10 heavyweight for sure.
The man was the total package, tremendous offensive and defensive boxing ability, monstrous punching power and durability.
I question people who leave Mike Tyson out of their top 10 greatest ever.
I don't regard Mike Tyson as the greatest heavyweight ever, but he is in the elite league of legends in the heavyweight division.
Tyson's only weakness was his ability to adapt under pressure, which many people said was Tyson quitting under pressure.
I take the view that Mike Tyson was clueless under the most relentless pressure, hence the reason why he was overcome by Douglas and Holyfield.
But beyond that, Mike Tyson defeats 99% of the heavyweights in history.
    yours thankfully
