I personally feel Mikey is a phenomenal boxer but he looks bloated and out of place within the elite at 147. The disparity between him and an elite WW like Spence was clearly shown when they fought. I also believe the top WW’s in Pacquiao, Thurman, Crawford, D.Garcia and Porter would ultimately hand Mikey more L’s. I can only see Mikey beating guys in the lower tiers, guys like Josesito Lopez, Amir Khan and Jessie Vargas (which he already has). My question is why doesn’t he move down to 140 and take over the division? I can honestly see him beating Josh Taylor and Jose Ramirez therefore unifying the division. Moreover, he could have bigger fights and most importantly winnable fights against boxers like Ryan Garcia, Tank Davis, Devin Haney, and Teofimo Lopez who will eventually move up to 140. Maybe even Loma, who knows, but the point is the move to 140 provides longevity and adds much more legacy to his career than being in a division which he clearly cannot contend at the elite level. What do you guys think about the move?

No big money fights at 140.

147 is good for his legacy if he can beat any of the Top 5 and it would make him lots of money.

I want him to fight Taylor, Loma and Prograis at 140, but he's making more money and getting much bigger fights at 147. Hardly ruining his career.

Sure, the money at 147 would be good in the short run especially if he gets Pacquiao. But how good would it be after he takes a couple losses and fans start counting him off as a journeyman or a stepping stone for other fighters. I’m just saying that he could make more in the long run if he took over 140 and waited for guys like Ryan and Tank to move up because those would be great fights which Mikey could clearly be the A side in especially if he takes over 140 as opposed to always being the B side against the elite at 147.

i don’t like seeing him bloated fighting at 147lbs.

I also didn’t like him shelving himself in the prime of his career for 2 years... In order to get out of the Arum Top Rank $lave deal.

Now that he is calling the shots on his own career he is making much more money & fighting less.

We don’t like it but hard to fault the man.
His life , his business & right About now ... bidness is booming for Mikey!

Mikey is a diva. Crawford, Bradley, and Lomachenko have all expressed that Arum is the best promoter. All 3 re-signed w/ Arum.

147 has more names, and also he probably likes to eat a little more. But 140 would be better. He would have more power and do better. I remember how much harder Oscar Delahoya punched for 140 than at 147.

Mikey has plenty of power at 147. Never seen Vargas hurt like that. Not by Pac or Josesito or Bradley.

135 is where he really had a shot at building something (with a view to potentially asserting himself at 140 after that), if he hadn't packed on pounds in pursuit of welter money. I get it to an extent, but I feel it was a short-sighted decision.

His legacy, if he has one, is one of non-commitment and haphazardness. It lacks clear definition, a mess of fights with some familiar guys with little in the way of high stakes beyond a cheque here and a cheque there.

    Bradley, Crawford & Lomachenko.

Are good & possibly great fighters.

But as far as being business oriented they are not say ...
Pacquiao, De la Hoya & Mayweather.
All great fighters & great business men who all left Arum for better business opportunities.

call them divas if you will. I’m sure Arum does.

    but I’d rather be in Paquiao’s, de la hoya’s & Mayweather positions then Bradley’s Crawford’s & Lomachenko’s position.

& Im pretty sure Mikey Garcia feels the same way.

If he intends to stay at Welter he could at least put some muscle on, instead of coming in flabby.

Mikey should be at 140. As has already been pointed out, he doesn't belong at the elite level of 147. Also, he does a lot of things well but isn't really great at any one thing. So moving up was a curious move.

There are more competitive fights at 140 that he could be involved in and win at the top level. Thus far he isn't ruining his career but another couple bad showings against the likes of a Manny or Crawford and that will about do it because he'll lose that luster.

Although Spence is a true welter... one would think Mikey could've made it more of a fight given the praise he receives for his technical ability. He looked in over his head though and that has to be taken into account.

he did look in over his head.
But to be fair to the man it was his 1st fight at that weight.
& he was taking on pretty much the consensus beast of the division ... that all but Kell brook had avoided at the time.
