As MMA, UFC, and Kickboxing grow it seems that Boxing is shrinking and taking a backseat. How much is the growth of other combat sports affecting Boxing and will Boxing survive?
UFC nowadays is like a shittier version kick-boxing. UFC use to be about the different martial arts going against each other and it was mildly entertaining and interesting. Aesthetically MMA and any grappling arts have always been miles behind boxing.
No for the 1000 times no. They are two different sports. Like Rugby and american football. Some similarity but thats it. Boxing is doing a fine job killing itself. 100 champions and the best never fighting each other.
Read the opening post here My God, they really have been saying boxing is dead for over a century https://forums.sherdog.com/threads/...ng-boxing-is-dead-for-over-a-century.1668361/ /End thread
I voted no because its boxing killing boxing, and yet also, it always survives. In the 1990s when you could not leave Target or Walmart without seeing a Hulk Hogan or Macho Man Savage action figure , poster, books or t-shirt on the stands where my Roy Jones Jr poster, book, action figure or t-shirt? Tito Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez, George Foreman, Michael Carbajal, James Toney, Michael Nunn, Roberto Duran, Macho Camacho, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Arturo Gatti, Vinny Paz, the Ruelas brothers, Floyd Mayweather, Riddick Bowe, Andrew Golota, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Tommy Morrison and SPECIALLY, Oscar De La Hoya? Nowhere. Thats where. Late in the decade Starting Lineup came with Leonard, Muhammad Ali, Rocky Marciano, Joe Frazier and Joe Louis figures. That was ity. Big whup. No promotional companies signed up to further promote their boxers and fights with Kenner. Boxing missed its golden opportunity cause promoters dont care about growing the sport.
Boxing outside of the U.S. is doing just fine. Within the U.S., yes MMA has hurt. But boxing's damage was mostly self inflicted and started years before UFC became popular. You can't have all these clown managers and promoters getting in the way of big fights, and belts that don't make sense. The public got sick of it and tuned out. And then they tried to compensate by juicing the diehard fans with more PPVs. And of course that didn't work either. The greater challenge now is to find an American broadcaster. The occasional Amazon PPVs aren't going to do it. With ESPN bowing out now, too, American boxing is in big trouble.
I think it was kinda true like 5 years ago when top boxers avoided each other constantly and COVID shutting boxing down. Then in 2021 and 2022, boxing started seeing a revival when Usyk beat AJ and Bivol schooled Canelo. The last few years have been a new golden age for boxing with so many good matchups.
UFC quality has gone down over the last few years. UFC 312 is a joke of a PPV by UFC standards. Two title fights sounds good, but then there is not a single top 10 contender in any of the other fights. Boxing in USA has fallen off greatly. Matchroom never got off the ground, PBC is in the toilet, Top Rank has been putting on worse and worse cards over the years. Showtime and HBO left town, and no one has replaced them in terms of production quality.
No. Lots of people get sick of matchmaking in boxing, but they always run back when the big fights get made. MMA just opens our eyes to how fighters don't need to stay undefeated.
MMA hasn’t opened our eyes, we knew about this before. Boxing is a big sport and doesn’t have HBO/Showtime like before like mma has ufc.
