dude are you serious right now? ...you ask if the duran who beat SRL on a night when SRL elected to stand toe-to-toe instead of box which was really his style, that duran was the best fighter of all time? For one thing he wasn't even fighting the best SRL and it was STILL a close fight. Imagine if leonard hadn't let his pride get in the way and boxed duran...SRL woulda shut him down....to me, duran is one of the most overrated fighters in boxing. He gets a lotta props for being real aggressive in the ring, and sure, he beat Esteban Dejesus 2 outta 3, but dejesus really wasn't great shakes...and dejesus dropped him in the first round in two consecutive fights. who else did duran beat? He struggled with RAY LAMPKIN!...imagine if that was shane or floyd or pea in there with him...they woulda taken him to school. Once duran moved up to welter and jr middle, he was easily outclassed by SRL in the rematch, hearns, benitez and hagler. he even lost to laing and simms...not a good look.
Yeah, dude...i'm a knucklehead because i don't worship at the altar of manos de piedra one of the most overrated fighters ever....dumba**
green man always brings up floyd in some way shape or form, its honestly funny to see because unlike boxing_master i dont believe he is trolling... anyways to answer your question. it was the defining performance of his career in my opinion (and thats saying something) and iv always said that duran winning was a case duran being to good as opposed to leonard not coming in "100%" i want to say NO montreal duran is not the best fighter, but in order to say that you are kind of obliged to atleast name a few other notable fighters (and if i was not so burnt out from training myself i might be able to muster up some, but for now im at a loss)
i think its worth mentioning that fighting srl and beating him (and SRL regularly makes ATG TOP 10s) is an amazing feat when you consider 147 was not durans strongest weight class. plenty of active ATG had tough fights with some opponents that they were expected to walk over
I voted yes but I have seen plenty of Duran fights to make it debatable. He put a boxing masterclass against a skilled Carlos Palomino. He mixed it up against an extremely hard punching Hector Thompson. Avenged his loss to Esteban deJesus and beat him a third time. He's got some big wins in there. Let's put it like this. Roger Mayweather when asked in an interview how would Floyd do against Duran, his answer was good enough to suggest it would be a bad idea to even fight him. Some people here need to do their homework and actually watch fights from an older time and that don't involve Mayweather
I think its fair to say he's the most complete fighter we have extensive footage of. His all round skill set is probably the best I've ever seen. Duran only trained 100% for a handful of fights according to himself and the people around him. He's already a stick on top ten ATG, imagine how much better he would have been if he took training serious for all of his fights and didn't eat and drink like a pig between fights. We will never see the likes again.
