Yes and he should be in the Hall of Fame. Look at his record and it says it all. He tore Bobby Watts apart way before Hagler beat watts aftet his loss to him. He stopped Scypion. Watch the fight. He beat a prime Benitez like no one else did. 2 victories over the terrific Parker ( although the 1st one is questionable I thought he won the second going away. ) A great fight and win over Alan. He deserves H of F status alone for puncturing the bull**** duva buildup bubble of gutless cherry picker bobby czyz. One of my all time favorite victorie s! I saw Mustafa often live and he was very exciting and a great bull of a fighter.
What does being in the HOF mean its a popularity contest ,there are more in it than out of it! Hamsho was a gutsy tough guy with great heart, no defence, and little skills.Benitez was never a ranked middleweight . Hamsho was a good contender ,and an exciting fighter who always gave100%, but never a great let alone an all time great.
It's my opinion ,and you have yours and we can be polite about it.. Unlike another whom I won't name because he isnt worthy of a mention.
Yes I can agree with that, what he lacked in natural talent he made up for in heart ,strength , and toughness. But a good 35 of his 51 opponents were either journeymen, novices ,or welters He had a very easy introduction into the pro ranks until he took a significant leap up in quality to fight Watts in his 19th fight.
Wasn't pretty to watch, but very exciting to watch. If he fought today the media and the posters on this site would tell us he wouldve beaten Hagler prime vs prime.(like they say Triple G wouldve) He was the ultimate crude brawler, he wouldn't have been out of place fighting, Zale,Graziano,Lamotta or Cerdan, or even earlier, Greb, or Walker. His "victory" over Benitez is tainted because of all the personal issues Benitez was having prior to the fight. ( Changed out his father's coaching, relationship and drug issues) But who's to say Hamsho wouldn't have beaten Benitez anyway because of his physical style and size . Is he an ATG? Well if fighters like Zale ,Graziano or Carter considered ATG's Hamsho should also be included.
He was very good, not sure about great...but certainly not ATG material unless you use a very loose criteria IMO
