He is doing Ward/Dawson, according to the 24/7. Buffer needs to keep doing the big fights, but if a younger guy with tons of twitter followers and a superstar wife gets involved, it could bring in new fans.
I can see him doing the locker room interviews. Edit: is he announcing the fighters ring walks Ect?? (I ASSumed he would be part of the crew)
I don't know, man.. I'm resistant to this notion that "anything that promotes boxing to the mainstream audience and bolsters its profile is automatically best for boxing". It's a niche sport, and I'm fine with that. It isn't dying, but it also isn't ever going to become mainstream again (or at least not in our lifetimes) and that's OK. Mario Lopez hosting some Golden Boy cards, fair enough, he's a big boxing fan. But bringing in random celebrities or commentators who primarily got their stripes calling other sports...I'm always going to be skeptical of that, no matter how many new fans they pull in. New/casual fan groups tend to be annoying. :yep I'd rather keep the club exclusive.
I feel you on that one, but find Lopez to be annoying. If they are going to bring in a celebrity, at least have that celebrity bring viewers and dollars to the table. Remember, I'm a sales/marketing guy. I doubt HBO will be dumb enough to give him too much air time. Boxing used to have celebrities in the crowd and do just fine. Mariah Carey isn't Frank Sinatra, but the sport could use some new blood, if for nothing more than to ensure it doesn't die.
