Where do you rank him? He won a gold medal in Rome in 1960, was a middleweight champ probably would have held the title quite a bit longer if not for Carlos Monzon.
No. Nino was lucky he had a 3 fight series with an undersized MW Griffith. Nino was getting severely challenged by other fighters late in his career. He turned down a defense against an old Curtis Cokes.
"All-time great" is a big word. It is often forgotten that Benvenuti was more of a light middleweight for most of his career. He went 65-0 until losing the light middleweight title, and then 18-6 after winning the middleweight title, with wins over former welterweights Rodriguez and Griffith.
Th reason i brought up Nino was about a month ago I saw a program about him on ESPN classic. The show talked about his training , boxing career and had interviews with Nino. I read up on him a bit and found that he is very close friends with Emile Griffith and was close to Monzon until Monzon's death. Seems like a very nice classy guy and great boxer. If he isnt a top 10 ATG, would he be in the top 15, maybe top 20?
Like TGA said, ATG is a strong word. Anything outside of the Top 10 is not ATG-level, and 160 isn't among the more talent-stacked divisions in history. (Lightweights hovering around the 15-20 mark are finer fighters than Nino.) Those calling him an ATG need to pull out a list of Top 10 (more likely Top 7-8 ) MWs and justify him being in it.
