Q: What do these 3 fighters all have in common?
A: All of these fighters are memorable names that WILL go down as top 10-50 all time P4P. All 3 had the tools, skills and potential to be mentioned in the same breath as Ray Robinson. I believe that all 3 were THAT good. However, all 3 were not 100% focused on the task at hand. They became sidetracked with other persuasions be it acting, endorsements, music, other sports, etc; that prevented them from achieving GOAT status. I believe that they all moved around a bit too much in weight classes as well. It's kind of a double edged sword. It's great to be known as a guy who won belts in 5 different weight classes. And in Roy's case he became the HW champion of the world. BUT it takes it's toll on your body.

Short answer to the question about DLH...yes he's an ATG. Top 20? No.

 

It's harder to argue against Oscar being a top 100 fighter than it is to argue for it. Our opinions of Oscar's resume and legacy ride almost completely on how we view his big fights.

Either he was robbed against Tito, or he didn't finish the fight like a champion and cost himself.

Either he convincingly outworked Whitaker, or he barely beat an aging ATG who still made him miss with alarming ease.

Either he gritted it out against a hard fighter in Ike Quartey, or he was lucky to get the nod.

Either he scored big wins against battle hardened vets in JCC and Genaro Hernandez at a precocious age, or he cherry picked his belts against faded oldsters.

I run down Oscar's resume, and honestly, I think his best, most unassailable win was over Vargas. He dug deep that night and put to bed any doubts that he could come back in a fight and gut out some truly difficult moments. I've got him losing both fights to Shane, and it's his own damn fault for gassing out against Tito. For whatever reason, he didn't have the courage to stand his ground when he needed to in that fight, and then didn't have the stamina to keep boxing effectively late.

In the end, stamina is what separates Oscar from the true greats in my book. In the age of twelve rounders, this guy consistently failed to close the show. He'd have been road kill in the day of the fifteen rounder. Knowing that, it's hard to compare him to the Leonards, Durans, Hearns, of the pantheon. And that's just at 147.

 

I just appreciate the tendency of most on here to use ATG with such discretion, treating such for the distinguished title it is. Oscar has my vote.

I love how people are undercrediting oscars win over whitaker. Do you guys know Whitaker was the # 1 p4p king in the world when oscar beat him? doesnt that count for something? whitaker was obviousely still very very good.

 

I stopped reading after this part. Anyone who scores moseley-DLH II for moseley does not know how to score a fight. it was a CLEAR CUT oscar decision, oscar won 6 of the first 7 rounds for crying out loud.

 

Oscar won the first 9 rounds of the Trinidad fight aswell.

 

Yes. I'd rate him in the Top 100 boxers of all time.
