Yes...This fight has world wide exposure....I suppose Hagler-Leonard compares but I dont' believe it was as widley promoted and thus, not as many people saw it. Than again with the internet and other communication advancements it's easier to get the word out...#1 vs #2 as well...I think Chavez-Whitaker had #1 vs #2 though...

Edit: Cant find the exact figures for the PPV just yet.

Leonard-Hagler also grossed around $80 million...Which in todays money Pac-Mayweather would have to gross about $150mill to match it.

From what I can gather Hagler made $19-20 million for the fight ($34-$36 million today) and Leonard made $25-30 milly ($45-55 million today)..Which is about 4-5 times what Manny made against Hatton.

Just some numbers for reference..but they are just numbers. I cant really track down much in regards to media coverage. Though it appears that fight painted the backs of several back pages as the biggest sports event of that day (being on Monday surely helped that)

I think they are going to struggle to significantly beat that. I cant see it being to much bigger if at all TBH.

Id like to see it get that big...but thats pretty friggen huge.

    ???

That memory remained incandescent as Arum kept trying to convince Hagler to accept one last challenge. To lure him back, Arum paid a then record $23 million in guaranteed purses, with $12 million going to Hagler. That marked the only time in his career that Leonard earned less than his opponent (an $11 million guarantee) and Hagler knew it. But he was not finished exacting a price from Leonard to meet him in the ring.

It was a promotion like few others before it, one that led Arum to dub the show "The Super Fight.'' It sold out the outdoor arena at Caesars Palace in a matter of days, jamming 15,400 people into the place. Millions more watched around the world at closed circuit locations and on a new fangled thing called pay-per-view that was available in only a relative handful of U.S. homes. The fight was so hyped that it even led to a battle between the staid Harvard Club of Boston and the local rights holder to the closed circuit feed. The Harvard Club wanted to stage a private showing of the fight at its facility in downtown Boston. The distributor refused. Even though Arum was a Harvard Law School graduate and Hagler's attorney a Harvard club member no dice. Also no private screening.

Look it up mate there are dozens of articles that have the final purses...Clearly they got more after the fight, they were just the minimum purses they were assured of.

The PPV numbers are probably off though...Didnt seem right to me but Ill see if I can dig up the two articles that I cross referenced that number from ages ago. It was quoting Arum.

I thought 2.4 Million PPV is the record.
How come Hagler - Leonard doesnt hold the record if it did 3.5-4 million ppv.

PPV was in its infancy in the 80's.

Btw, close circuit sales is where they sold millions and that only amounted to slightly more than the purse. If you're referring to what you've read on wiki, its bogus since there's no citation, ie. any crackrjack can edit wiki and w/o a citing...

Here's an abstract from The Wash Post, circa 87.

Money is what Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard both say they won't be fighting for April 6 in Las Vegas, but money is one thing they're going to have to live with.
Bob Arum, who never said he promotes strictly for the fun of it, should make plenty of money, too, if his plans work out.
Already, he says he has collected $27 million, mainly in guarantees from rights sold to closed-circuit exhibitors around the country. That would be comfortably more than the $23 million total he has guaranteed to both fighters, assuring Arum of a hefty payday, too.

Really hard to say the historical significance until a few (or even many) years have past.

Nah I dont quote much of wiki mate...its full of shite.

So far I can only find a saying up to 3 million pay per view customer was possible (Chicago Tribune late 86) but then Arum saying months later that only 4 million were able to watch Hagler-Leonard on pay per view and Hearns-Roldan would have double that amount..Basically its possible if every cable subscriber in the country bout the fight we could get those figures but obviously thats not going to happen ...So I believe Ive mixed it up there, my bad.

It's got far more signifigance that Hagler/Leonard:yep Pacman/Floyd ai'nt no show biz hype fight. This is Leonard/Duran 1 Montreal & it'll end the same way with the underdog smacking the crap out of the betting favorite:bbb:deal

I would think if anybody knew the PPV numbers it would be HBO. And they said they sold a relative handful, which does not make 4 million sold.

The only thing that sold in millions was closed circuit tv's, which made 27m as Arum stated. Maybe ya mixed PPV with closed circuit?

This is Leonard-Hagler, Hagler-Hearns, Leonard-Duran, or Leonard-Hearns type material in terms of publicity. Biggest fight in 25 years, that's for sure, and under 160 to boot!

this question would have to be broken down into parts

paq v mayweather is a bigger fight in asia than leanord v hagler

leanord v hagler was a bigger fight in western countries than paq v mayweather ever will be simply because even though hagler v leanord was ppv it went out free to air straight after, which tv companys hardly ever do nowdays and because hagler and leanord had way way bigger fanbases in western countires than mayweather or paq simply because they had milions and millions of viewers watch there free to air fights over the previous decade.

nowdays only people who have ever watched mayweather box are die hard boxing fans, never numbering even 1.5 million in a country of 300,000,000 million , compare that to the leanord and hagler era , when i do not know american boxing tv figures for this period , but to give an example bruno/mcguigan/benn
ie fighters from the same era got 17,000,000 uk viewers alone for fights .

PPV american tv market has killed mass intrest in american boxing.

young people now will say it is, but for those who remember Hagler/Leonard, it was a huge fight. There were one hour programs on regular TV stations about the fight. Hearns/Hagler was huge also with every station on the news mentioning it as the first story of the day believe it or not. But we forget. I do not think Mayweather/Pacman can be what those were then since at the time boxing was bigger and the stars in boxing were well known from fighting on regular TV.
