You see all these threads talking about the power punching ability of either May or Pac. People say Floyd has weak power (I dont agree) and make Pac out to be Tyson in the Mid 80's. But is Pac really a power puncher? I consider him a accumulative puncher in the same vein as May with the only difference being May does not throw nearly as many punches as Manny. Saying Manny is a power puncher (usually based on his early KO against Hatton) is the equivalent to saying Sergio Martinez is a KO artist because of the Paul Williams fight IMO. Anyway enjoy the fight tonight!

He had better power at lower weights (both did) but it's the speed and angles that catch opponents out most imo. Pac is an overrated punched and underrated boxer. Just my 2 cents.

    Enjoy the fight!

Which fighters (if any) would you describe as true power punchers at welter these days?

Ask Algieri, Bradley, JMM and Mosley - 4 of his last 5 opponents.

According to people in this forum, he doesn't have power because he's not knocking people out. OK, but he's knocking them down, I guess its ok for Floyd to go down just as long as he's not KO'd.

Thurman can hit a bit. That Zewski was looking like he might be something of a banger but now i'm not sure.

I'm not sure, either. I think to honestly gauge this question, you would need to define exactly what you mean when you say "true power puncher", and depending on what that is, I think Pacquiao could qualify as such.

In this division hes not much of a KO artist but i think he hits too hard to be classed as NOT a power puncher.

Would you class Provodnikov a power puncher? He couldnt KO Bradley and Algieri either?

Yeah, defo the two guys I mentioned wouldn't qualify either.

I also think it's important to stress that Pacquiao's been in with granite-chinned fighters specifically since he stopped Cotto, helping explain his lack of stoppages. On the other hand I think a true power-puncher might be expected to stop one of these seven beasts. After all Provodnikov nearly stopped Bradley, Mundine stopped Mosley, Margarito was stopped by Mosley and i'll be a little surprised if Algieri never gets stopped. These guys ARE stoppable and he ain't stopping them.

    Fair points, all.

Although I think it's fair to also mention that his power gave them all reason for concern, and certainly played a role in altering their strategies at times, or for long durations even.
