Is Pacquiao defending his 140lb belt as leverage for Mayweather?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by Crax Sellerman, Mar 17, 2010.

  1. Supposedly, Pacquiao wants to defend his 140lb Ring title in his next fight so he doesn't lose it. Assuming this is true (which it very well may not be), is this a ploy to gain some more leverage for the inevitable negotiations with Floyd??

To put it another way, is he creating another obstacle?

For example, I can foresee the following scenario:

Floyd: "Take my blood tests, you cheating *****!"
Manny: "Sure I'll take them if we fight at 140lbs."
    Floyd: "**** you!"
Manny: "OK, I will compromise. Catchweight of 140.1lbs."
    Floyd: "**** you!"
Manny: "I do not wish to trash talk my opponent. It does not set a good example for alla da pipple dat lahv buxing."
Floyd: "Your mom sucked my dick last night!"
Manny: "Have you seen my mom before? I don't know if I'd share that information so eagerly."
Ellerbe: "Say it ain't so, Floyd!!"

    etc

Depending on the Pacquiao-Clottey PPV numbers and the upcoming Mayweather-Mosley PPV numbers, I think parties involved probably won't be so agreeable to a 50/50 purse split again, either.

My confidence that THE FIGHT ever occurs is waning by the day.

Could be...or he's just saying that Floyd lost his opportunity by blowing their fight out of the water. I think we could see Manny fight Floyd but I'm guessing if Manny fights at 140 to defend his title that we won't see FLoyd and manny square up until 2011.

Absolutely. He's not going to look for the fight to be at 140 or to be a catchweight, but if he makes a stink that he really wants to keep the 140 pound belt, then it gives him a little bit of leverage at the negotiating table. To get a 50/50 split again, there needs to be a legitimate other fight that Pacquiao could make where he'd get similar money to fighting Mayweather, unless against all odds the Pac-Clottey PPV did as well as the Mayweather-Mosley PPV.

Pac's never cared about keeping his belts before, why would he now? Here's a guy who's made a total of, what, 5 title defenses in his career?

That fight doesn't exist. Marquez and Mosley would be the only other two that could generate that type of money for Pacquiao. However, Mayweather ruined the Marquez fight for Pac and he's about to ruin the Mosley fight.

  10. I think if Pacquiao were to challenge Valuev it would generate some serious interest.

50/50 is a forgone conclusion. Any "leverage" gained is about the fight happening period. Your argument about the PPV numbers is total trash, since it doesn't take the opponents into account. Did you forget that Pac/Cotto sold at least 20% more than PBF/Marquez? And did you notice Pac/May agreed to 50/50 purse right at the beginning? It's not even a question. If the fight doesn't happen, it'll again be for some other reason.

Things change. If Mayweather-Mosley gets double the buys that Pacquiao-Clottey does (which I don't think it particularly unlikely), then I'd be surprised if Mayweather doesn't not only insist on drug testing, but tries to get a bigger split as well. Pacquiao's losing most of his leverage.

Pacquiao isn't garnering much leverage, Mayweather is probably going to sell double the total PPV of Pacquiao-Clottey, perhaps even triple giving him much more leverage as now he will be a Belt Holder, having sold more PPVs than Pacquiao in 5 of their last 6, perhaps even supplanted him on the P4P rankings. So in closing, Pacquiao ends up behind, not ahead because the fight fell through.
