Is Paul Smith still fighting on 30th Oct?

Well accroding to this it isn't off.

TONY QUIGLEY has laughed off all talk of him pulling out of the October 30 British title defence against Paul Smith.

Rumours have been spreading across the city that the super-middleweight champion had withdrawn from the highly anticipated ECHO Arena clash.

But in a call to the ECHO Quigley joked: "Have you heard that I am out of the fight? Apparently I've pulled out, only thing is, nobody told me.

"Had I known that I was pulling out of the fight I wouldn't have continued running up and down the Welsh mountains every day in camp."

Safe to say then that the champion is in fine spirits and looking forward to the Friday Night Fights live Sky Sports card.

"There is nothing imaginable that would keep me from this fight," Quigley adds. "We still have about eight weeks to go and I am already two weeks into my camp so things couldn't be better.

"I've been travelling down to North Wales a lot and running up and down the valleys, which is tough work. There's one or two mountain ranges down there that have made me wish the fight was off maybe, but rest assured I'll be ready for October 30."

With all the early running and stamina fitness practically in the bag then Quigley plans to get back in the boxing gym this week, but did reveal that he completed eight rounds on the pads the other day and felt strong.

He adds: "It's early days in the camp but already I feel so much fitter than I have done previously. There's a few weeks to go yet but I'm already in good shape and really can't wait."

When he's not in Wales the 24-year-old champion runs along the Dock Road and past the ECHO Arena, the scene of his greatest triumph and, what he hopes, will be his glorious first defence.

Quigley captured the Lonsdale Belt when stepping in at late notice after just 13 fights to halt Tony Dodson in the 12th round of a thrilling first night of professional boxing at the new King's Dock venue in March.

And he admits that already the venue holds a special place in his heart.

"It was just such a pleasure to be involved in such a great fight at the new arena," he confessed. "I still speak to Tony (Dodson) about it all the time and he's as proud as me that we put on such a great fight.

"We were delighted last week when it was confirmed as being on the short list for British fight of the year and I run past the arena all the time and recall how great it felt walking out in front of all those Scouse boxing fans.

"I believe there will be even more fans this time around and I know that again it will bring out the best in me."

Quigley had planned for a voluntary defence first against former champion Brian Magee earlier in the summer, but the collapse of Setanta Sports scuppered he plans of promoters Hayemaker which opened the door for mandatory challenger Smith.

His promoter Frank Warren won the purse bids for this fight last month and quickly confirmed that the show would take place in Liverpool with an undercard which includes both of Smith's younger brothers - Stephen and Liam, light-heavyweight Tony Bellew and Olympians James Degale and Frankie Gavin.

I heard Quigly was looking a two week delay after hurting his shoulder and wouldn't be able to spar until mid october think the article was on the main page the other day...

Saw the same article about him wanting a couple of extra weeks, in that same article he did say that if he couldnt get the extension he'd fight on 30th anyway. Local papers havent said it's off, so I presume it's still on (coupled with the article posted above, the source of which by the way is the scene where they talk about boxing).

Are you involved in his camp then?

To be fair, Dodson fought a near text book fight against Quigley just couldnt handle the power. Is Paul taking anything from that? Any news on the shape Quigley is in? He needs to be in better condition for this one than he was for Dodson!

yer mate am in smiggas camp hes lookin great already, goin to be a cracking fight with to great fighters just wat the city needs and yer paul will be takin note of the shape quigley was in last time but u carnt take nothin away from him he proved its not over till the last bell

Paul is a lot better than he's shown so far!! He'll be up for this like never before and I know for 100% fact he'll be in the best shape of his life!! He'll walk through Quigley I really believe that, As for Magee that would be a ******* BUT I believe when Paul wins it'll be Dodson Vs Smith in Liverpool...:good
