IN the 20+ years of Ring Magazine, Is Paul Williams the worst top 10 Ring's pound4pound fighter ever?

80-90% of the names that entered the top 10 p4p fighter of Ring Magazine would be a hall of famer.

Among those who will surely not enter are Tim Austin, Antonio Esparragoza, Marlon Starling, Raul Perez, Junior Jones, Stevie Johnson, Yuri Arbachakov, Kennedy Mckinley, Kevin Kelly, Miguel Angel Gonzales, Frankie Randall, Sun Kil Moon,

Jermaine Taylor, Zab Judah, Paul Williams, Christian Mijares still have to make big wins to improve their resume

Is Paul Williams the worst top 10 Ring's pound4pound fighter ever? If not, then who is the worst?

no, paul has good wins. close dec over martinez, winky and prime margarito (probably with loaded gloves) are very good wins. if he were british with those wins, we'd be making room for him in the hall of fame. he probably will never recover from the martinez ko as a fighter and after the way he looked last night everyone wants to jump on him when he's down like he was never good to begin with. paul was a good fighter with major flaws but hardly the worst ever the be ranked lb for lb.

I really believe he was as a pfp type fighter for a short period... His win over prime Margo,Martinez(although controversial still very close with elite opponent)...Even his win over past it Verno and Winky were good.. Those 2 still were good fighters, its just Paul style was all wrong for them.. Busy Paul beats most crafty but war torn oldie but goodies..,,HIs revenge blowout over Quintana was also impressive..

Starling and Randall were the best fighters you mentioned,, Both elite and top pfp fighters on thier good days,, I can see making a case for Starling getting in the hall..,Maybe even Junior Jones a longshot.l And Sung Kil Moon should probably get in,.

At their peaks best HTH were

    Randall
    Starling
    Esparragoza'
    Williams at Welter
Moon- good resume he should fet in HOF
Mckinney -Jones i know Mcckinney won but both faded versions,
    Gonzalez At Lw
    Johston
    Perez Arbachakov
    Austin Williams at JM
    Kelly-Judah
    Mijares-Taylor

Not much seperating alot of hese guys though.

A Weltrr version of Williams was more dangerous and harderto beat at WW.. He carried more power, better chin.. and guys werent as strong as at JM.

Pavlik,Tom Johnson,Mayorga,Juan DIaz are a couple other top 10 pfp flash in the pah guys.

    He was legitimate at 147.

Due pretty much completely to his natural gifts and grit but the fight with Margo was huge at the time.

Did Caballero ever make the list? If he did, he's the worst. Paul's pretty bad though in terms of his inability to make adjustments.

Paul is getting seriously underratted. He WAS the most feared fighter in the sport. He was never unbeatable or unknockoutable. Same with Margarito and Hatton. When a fighter loses it doesnt erase the earlier perception of him. I always thought Williams was a disaster waiting to happen, but i also thought he would match up well with Mayweather. I still feel that in 2008 he would have.

Definitely not ever, and probably not within the last ten years, either.

I'd say the likes of Juan Manuel Lopez and other similar briefly ranked fighters have accomplished less over the span of their careers. It's not an ATG or HOF stamp of approval, it's a recognition of divisional supremacy. In terms of quality of opposition, Williams deserved to be there for a time.

Williams has always been a worse version of Diego Corrales in my mind. A physical speciman at welterweight, but overated to all hell as a fighter. His trainer is a moron and should be replaced if he continues.

Teach the guy how to fight tall throw a decent jab and righthand behind it and he could probably beat most of the welterweights out there just using his size and reach alone. And yes he can learn that, his trainer is a moron for not recognizing it and making him a pressure fighter with no defense. He cant punch in close quarters with his long lanky arms.

Once again, sheer revisionism. I recall the days even when I joined ESB about Pacquiao and Mayweather 'ducking' this man and 'finding every excuse not to fight him'.... He was a good fighter for a time. Flawed through and through, but a good fighter.

Yuri Arbachakov better make it into the HoF, one of the best of his weight ever imo.

Fighters tend to become overated as they are moving up the ladder of contention knocking over cans. Look what people were saying about David Haye before he even faced a decent heavyweight.

Caballero was ranked No. 10 in the Ring P4P list for a short time. Caballero is actually a very good comparison for PW because both of them had a big size advantage over their opponents unlike the other boxers mentioned by the TS.

Williams is terribly technically flawed but at WW everyone was running scared of him, 6'2and an 82 inch reach and a 100 punches a round while being a damn fine athlete.

Cotto is not P4P any better than Williams, technically better but remember he lost to the Margarito Williams beat, he was given an easy title back at 154lbs where as Williams had terrible management putting him in with the exact same style as he suffered in his 2 losses in his comeback

Everyone knows I'm a massive FMJ fan but even I gave Williams a very good shot against FMJ in 2007, a much better 1 than Pacman, Cotto, Margarito. Last night made me reconsider that somewhat but the 3 opponents who've really bossed Williams were also southpaws and I don't think he has the angles against those men.
