All mandatories, even Espino in reality.

Were those his only options? I know he has to defend or lose the title but he could have made one step up in comp during those defenses

He tried to get Calzaghe and instead had a fight with Bhop. Is that a step up? Then he lost a year to his hand infection.

If Martinez stuck to 160 he is one of the top 3-4 guys in the division. Pavlik and Williams( who I think won the fight with Martinez) are the only two guys I'd for sure put ahead of Martinez. Winky and Sturm would be tough on Martinez but I think Sergio wins both so this is a good title defense for Pavlik. I'd put Pavlik's defenses as follows:
1 Martinez- good fighter and a fine title defense for Pavlik
2 Rubio-not a bad fighter, probably gets put down more than he should since this is the best guy Pavlik's defended against so far, but in reality he's not a bad fighter.
3 Espino-tough guy who gave his all but a weak defense for Pavlik. Unless he is going to defend 3-4 times a year he shouldn't be fighting guys on this level.
4 Lockett-I get that he was a mandatory but this is a very poor title defense. If you're going to make sure you make your mandatories when they are this poor than you have to fight guys like Abraham, Williams, Sturm, etc. to make up for it. Martinez is the first guy on that level.

Sturm looked bloody awful in his fight with Gevor, and he was last seen on a conference call with Jenny Craig and the Weight Watchers Hot Line. The freaking guy is walking around at 192 pounds! If Felix can drop the weight and return to peak form, he'd beat Williams without to much trouble. I have some doubts about him beating Martinez.

The bottom line is Sturm is not available. He has a mandatory with Golovkin coming up, and he needs to drop more than 30 pounds before fight time.

Pirog will be Pavlik's next WBO mandatory. He already stated that he plans to come over to our side of the pond and fight on American TV before he pushes for his shot.

On February 22nd Winky Wright did an interview with Fight Hype. He said he plans to sign with Top Rank, return to 154, and clean out the division.

Macklin had a shot at the WBO mandatory spot. All he had to do was beat Pirog. He pulled out twice over injuries.

I don't know much about N'jigiwaddywoomba, or what the hell ever his name is. I do know he isn't ever going to get a shot at Pavlik unless he stops fighting 3rd tier competition in France and starts to make a bit more of a rep for himself.

Pavlik/Sylvester is a 70/30 fight. 70% chance Sylvester leaves on a stretcher. 30% chance he wobbles out under his own steam. He also has a mandatoy with Karmazin coming up.

Gevor is a feather fisted midget that Martinez and Williams would both run right the **** over. David Lopez would take Gever to school, and dismiss the class in 9 or 10 rounds. I have no clue why he is so highly rated.

Karmazin called out Abraham before AA moved up. Since then he called out Sturm, and earned a mandatory shot at Sylvester. He has never mentioned Pavlik. Styles make fights, and Roman may be "Made in Hell," but Pavlik runs that joint.

And so it goes, on down though the list at 160. Martinez is Pavlik's best choice for a spring fight. Arum, Dunkin, and Team Pavlik all wanted Kelly back in the ring in March, or April at the latest. Within that time frame Sergio Martinez is the biggest challenge and best name who was actually available and willing to fight.

True. I forgot Claslappy ducked him. I still think he could have defended against Winky or moved up instead of those three nuthing fights.

You made a thread where you claim Pavlik is cherry picking, but you voted for Martinez by decison in this VERY PUBLIC POLL!

So, in your opinion, Pavlik "cherry picks" fights with guys who will beat him:patsch

I agree with Booradley that I don't think there's a heck of a lot of options for him at 160. In my opinion, Pavlik destroys Sturm who is probably the second best in the division. That's why I think he should move up. Even though the Super 6 is going on there are still a bunch of really good fights that can be made at 168 for him.

Winky was offered good money and turned it down. He thinks Pavlik is some cash cow pulling down $10 mill or more a fight for some reason. I think he was offered $1.5 mill and a portion of the PPV. This after he hadn't fought in a long time.

Yep. Im asking the question because if Pav was Floyd he would get **** for these fights. That said i think the B-hop fight could have been considered cherrypicking because he had AA waiting in his division the whole time but he chose a 40 year old coming off a loss. Pav just happens to be bad at cherrypicking:lol:

as i recall aa was already fighting when pav/bhop was made. in fact, i'm pretty sure the bhop fight was made after negotiations with paul williams camp fell apart.

the MW division is like a field of cherries, with most of them rotten.
