Funnily enough, I think Roger Mayweather might have been favourite to beat Whitaker at the time. :good
He could realistically lose to all 3 too. And he wouldn't hold his own against DLH aged 33 (unless on PEDS, and not even then really). Even if he did somehow beat him, there is no real chance of him outclassing Chavez the way Whitaker did.
The irony of a guy that starts an account to sandbag Whitaker calling me an agenda driven maniac. Fair play though, not everything you say is ridiculous. Why in the hell would Whitaker fight Breland, Camacho or Taylor between 1994-1996? Those fights were all irrelevant in that time frame. Whitaker should have stayed off the drugs and beat Quartey and DLH decisively. That was his fault. Tito would have never faced a live version of Pea. Also, why would you discount Whitakers h2h ability based on his resume not being 1 tenth of Robinson's? That's not how h2h talks go. If you want to dismiss it, say he struggled whenever he faced a great opponent, whilst Robinson never did, or something stupid like that. It would be an advancement on your current argument. Although still flawed.
S_S completely shutting this **** down. :rofl :deal Always took you for one of the best around, but the Gavilan Top 10 comment cemented it, I think. :yep That's a bridge I couldn't cross with certainty, much as I'd like to.
How many times did you tune in to see Duran tested in the fights he won? Buchanan? Dejesus 2? Leonard 1? Barkley? When you're that good, it's not often that you get tested. Doesn't diminish a fighter's accomplishments if they stand out amongst the pack - so long as they are fighting a good level of fighter of couse. Some seemed to favour Roger over WHitaker, because the glass jaw wasn't figured to be an issue. And no, I wouldn't favour Roger agaisnt Arguello, because there the chin becomes a factor. From a stylistic stand point, Whitaker might have more problems with Roger than he does with Arguello. Styles make fights.
:good In another irony, this character is probably a Floyd or Pac nut hugger, but doesn't have the balls to talk about them directly, so he's trying to tear Whitaker down by a scatter gun approach throughout history. It's a brave move. Maybe I should have tried the ushvinder approach: Barney Ross and Willie Pep are overrated!
Floyd, I'd guess. He was getting beat down in a few different threads recently by Whitaker and in The General, at that. That stings. :good Incredibly brave. I'd put him comfortably in my top 20, but many posters seem to have him even further out than that :verysad : My reason for trying to get a gauge for where people placed him at least in a divisional sense at 147. He's the real deal to me, both in terms of record and ability. People seem to get turned off by the odd losses, but that's how it is these days.
Thank heavens I missed those discussions Definitely a victim of the times in that sense. Dropped quite a few bogus decisions. The key to him is getting past the record and just watching him do his thing. People need a good entry point, like his "draw" in Bratton II, where he whooped the cover off him, or even the "controversial" Graham fight which shows an outstanding display of skill by both, but which Gavilan won quite clearly. The Gil Turner fight is another good place to start. I can see why some would think what's the big deal? If all they watch is the Basilio or the god awful Saxton fight though.
I've really been meaning to look a lot deeper into his shoddy decision losses but it seems I'm never at my computer. Using this particular back-up device, reading news archives is basically an impossibility. Yeah, I like Graham and all, and he would've been champion if he'd won. But he didn't in all reality, and it wasn't particularly controversial at all IMO. I'm still in disbelief from the left hook Basilio dropped him with - granted, it was one hell of a shot - but Keed on the canvas is disturbingly unusual. He gets a little grief over the Ike KD, but it wasn't as if Williams wasn't an ATG puncher or Kid was holding any type of tremendous weight advantage over him. From most reports, it'd seem that was also a fight in which he should've won. This is of course, speaking from the perspective that I think he had one of The Greatest Chins ever. I dub him Senor Imparable. :deal
Eh, knockdowns happen. Balance is not really a factor when it comes to chin. Don't think Gavilan was hurt against Carmen at all... Would love to see him take some hard punching from Ike and Sugar though.
That kind of a day, huh? I hope some obnoxious **** really ruffles your feathers on here today to see some fireworks. :yep Agreed. I'd empty my savings account to see the Robinson fights. There isn't one (or two) god damn fights I want to see more than those, other than possibly Greb-Tunney I.
