Disagree, Napoles did his best work at the 147 weight class but was weighing as low as 136 at the age of 28, if he stayed at 135-140 he would be beastly Still Whitaker beats him, he's just better and sublime
Um No, I can criticize whitaker for never fighting a middleweight great, Napoles lasted 6 rounds with arguably the best middleweight ever. Napoles was a warrior, he didnt care about protecting his 0. If you dont want to fight a middleweight, at least fight terry norris. Whitaker and Taylor could have fought in 1989, the fight could have happened. Even when whitaker was at 135, he was taking random fights at 140. Lou Duva chose to make sure the fight never happened. The Duvas are the ones that put meldrick in there with terry norris, meldrick vs pernell in either 1989 or 1992 would have answered alot of questions.
Your opinion, I disagree. I would have floyd easily outboxing trinidad. I watch floyd's fights objectively, i dont watch his fights hoping he gets ko'd. I dont think trinidad is all that great, floyd isnt going to stand flat footed and go to war with him. By the way, i remember 10 years ago Oscar used to be a sacrificial lamb in fantasy head to head matchups. Hes been retired for 4 years and now people are suddenly picking him to beat atgs, funny how retirement changes the stance people have on fighters. I remember people used to pick every single great to beat oscar in head to head matchups. Oscar and Tito arent the only guys i was mentioning. Whitaker looked horrendous against hurtado, the cuban was giving him a boxing lesson for ****s sakes. Its going to be a while before mayweather gets his ears boxed off by c level fighter.
Right, so fresh off of winning the IBF belt, which wasn't even that esteemed at that point, Whitaker should have jumped up to 140 and fought Meldrick. Sounds more logical than beating the fighters in his division.... In 92 Meldrick was struggling to make welterweight whilst Whitaker had just entered the 140 pound ranks. Shortly thereafter Meldrick was beaten by Espana and lost any steam he might have had. Their paths simply never crossed. Perhaps if Meldrick kept his Aaron Davis level up, they could have met 94 ish, but alas it wasn't to be. Whitaker never attempted a suicide mission against Toney or Jones, lower your estimations for him because of that if you wish....
Then you should know with your great objectivity that Floyd has been backed into corners by Hatton, Cotto and even Carlos Baldomir at times at 147. I would be in shock if Trinidad doesn't knock a 35 year old Mayweather clean out. He would run him out of the ring and Floyd doesn't near have the legs anymore to avoid him. DLH would also have his way with this Floyd. The Frankenstein version of 5 years ago was still giving Floyd fits. A prime one against an even slower Mayweather and Floyd would get blitzed. DLH ten years ago was being put up against Duran, Ortiz, Ike Williams and welterweights like Leonard, Hearns and Robinson. I invite you to start a thread with a poll and see how he does right now in them against those guys. We're talking about matching him up with a 35 year old semi-retired stage-managing welterweight, not a prime Leonard or Hearns. As for Whitaker and his supposed non technical style which lead to defeats and struggles, I'm pretty sure it had more to do with not being in fighting shape and being a full blown addict. Even so, he'd probably still do better against a re-tread Cotto than what Floyd did.
Right, so you saw a disheveled, post-rebab Whitaker eat bombs from Trinidad with a broken jaw and you wouldn't be suprrised if Napoles and Pryor spark him out. Right. If I was to bet on anyone getting stopped it would be Napoles, whose face could resemble a Picasso painting after their fight due to a combination of his brittle skin and Whitaker's jab. We've seen THAT happen, against lesser fighters, so there'd TRULY be no surprise there.
And be shredded up by some ordinary fighters in his prime :good IMO, if they were to fight, Whitaker would win at 135, too quick and too good on the defensive end. Napoles would win at 147 where Whitaker had noticeably slowed.
Brittle skin aside, I'd say they're about on par for ability. Napoles with an edge in skill, Kid with an edge in athleticism.
Yeah, Mantequilla doesn't give up too much at all when paired with just about anybody at 147 in terms of his skill set but unfortunately, the skin issue is always a factor and concern in any 'fantasy fight' involving him. Kid's speed, awkward angles and work rate put to full use of their capabilities put him at a big risk over 15.
Pernell gets credit, quite rightly, for being one of the best fighters over the last twenty five years. A defensive wizard.
