Jones seems to be able to absolutely manhandle everyone he comes into contact with at lhw - good wrestlers like Bader and Hamill, guys with good TDD like Rampage and Machida, strong stand-up fighters like Shogun. It seems that even if you can get the better of Jones on the feet (like Machida did) you're screwed because his grappling and strength are so ridiculously good. Now obviously from what we've seen so far Jones would utterly destroy Phil Davis on the feet, but leaving that issue aside for a moment, is Davis the only man out there who can compete with Jones on the wrestling front? Davis is more decorated than Jones in wrestling and seems to be naturally bulkier, would Davis be able to take down Jones and get the better of him on the mat, or would Jones do to Davis what he does to everyone and manhandle him if they grappled with each other?
The thing about jones is that even if he gest taken down I'd still bet that he ends up on top. His chicken legs mean he has nearly all of his 205lbs in his upper body and his strength and technique means 99 times out of 100 he ends up in the best position. Also when he is on top all that weight is right on top of the guy on the bottom. Looks like a HW wrestling a MW most of the time.
Not his grappling? Submitting Alexander Gustafsson with an anaconda choke didn't impress at all? I'm not too impressed by his all-round game, but his grappling seems very good.
It could give him the best position, but it would should cause him to have a high base, which isn't all that good for stuffing takedowns. That guy is just a freak, and Davis' wrestling in MMA is nothing special.
I've never been impressed by Rashad. I fully expect Davis to be much stronger than him when they fight, and get the better of the grappling. Rashad will win the stand-up though, Davis is pretty weak in that area.
King Mo could take him down... Davis is naturally bigger and a better wrestling resume and Rashad could.. Chael Sonnen could as well.
I don't believe Jones has the best td, numerous are stuffed and not by hardcore wrestlers. When he gets a hold of you though, he seems like he is all over you and fighters struggle with that. You think your hips are far back enough but for him to step in and trip you within range is easy cos he is so big. Davis and Rashad have the wrestling. Rashad has the striking on top of it. Surely both of them would use their wrestling because their striking is at a height/reach disadvantage. I want to see someone take it to him with hardcore striking and grappling. Jones division is stacked with expert styles Shogun (amazing Muay Thai), Machida (amazing Karate) & Rampage (ko power) but I wonder if they are fighting like old school mixed martial artists. They have good grappling but guys today really need to have a strong grappling and striking. Evans has an average chin & isn't particularly big but hecan fight as a pure striker, pure wrestler or both and I like the idea of Jones being wary of both.
Yeah, his grappling is very good, but it's not super impressive. There's a lot of guys with very good grappling who wouldn't stand a chance against Jones.
